Simply put -- the more college football, the better. I've wanted more college football talk on sports radio for years. Make it happen, Mac.

This. But make sure it is not just talking about investment opportunities. Nobody is listening to Mac for wagering advice.

I listen to RivalsRadio also. Well, as long as I can handle all of the hillbilly drawl, and talk about Auburn and Tennessee.

I don't understand how people who are huge football fans have zero interest in college football. I don't get it. Can someone share what the turn off is?

For me it is a myriad of reasons but it starts with the pace of the game. With all of the time stoppages with the moving of the chains and things of that nature it seems like the games take longer than a pro game. Now I do not know if this is a fact or just perception but thats the way it seems every time I try to sit down and watch a complete college football game.

Additionally I do not like the overtime system at all in college football and I know how some people really like it and how it is more fair than the NFL system but I find it to be pretty anticlimactic and boring myself.

Plus the BCS is a big turn off. Most of the bowls seem corrupt and the fact that there is not a true winner is a pretty big negative in my opinion. I do not like investing my time caring about a sport where you can make a case that multiple teams are the true champion.

Lastly and probably most importantly is that I find it difficult to identify and keep up with all of the players. I have a fairly good handle on who is good in the pros and like watching football played at a very high level but every time I turn on college football Saturdays I find myself getting bored and flipping channels. I am sure that alot of this comes from the fact that I grew up in Chicago and never had a strong affiliation to any college team and where I went to college has a much more legit and exciting basketball program so I just kind of drifted away from watching the college game.

I know this is kind of long winded but I just wrote free form about my feelings on the college game. For the record I do not begrudge anyone their enjoyment of the college game and I have been to a few college games and love the tailgating and stadium atmostphere but I find that I usually can find more enjoyable things to do on a Saturday then sitting down with College Football.

I wouldn't say I have zero interest but I don't have the time to invest in it. The number of teams make it too difficult to keep up with and I can't spend all Saturday watching it like because I make the choice to follow the NFL. I think as I get older I'm drifting away from college stuff in general.

I like the college football talk when it's on a lot. If it's not on I'm okay with that as well. I could see somebody like me or in the same situation saying if I can't follow it why would I want to listen to talk about it?

Phil,

Good stuff. I do not begrudge anyone who doesn't follow college football. I just didn't understand the pro fans who can't handle the college game. Names are constantly changing. I get that. I'm in the minority on the overtime. To me, its like a totally different sport they are playing than the one they played for the first 60 minutes. I've never heard that there are more time stoppages or takes longer for the moving of the chains. That might be a perception due to your lack of interest.

Yea, I certainly don't set aside my saturdays for all day viewing. I take in what I can. I just don't understand why college football talk is ptfb programming, even in Chicago. So many graduates in the area, especially big ten ones. Bars are constantly packed with college alumni watching their teams - and I've seen all ages.

This is one of my favorite parts about heading out to watch college football. As someone who doesn't really have a true college tie (Iowa is closest because of family that goes there), I like interacting with the different fan bases that show up at the bar I go to. I don't do it every week, but I like hearing about it, and getting fans' perspectives on who might be good, or bad, who might be an overrated prospect and who might fly under the radar. I don't do it every week, but I try to get there a couple of times a month once league play starts.

There are games in the NFL people have no interest watching because the teams suck and/or no connection to the city. I like the big 10 but I'm not going to sit down and watch a MN/IU game. I wouldn't punch the button on the talk about it but I wouldn't glue myself to the radio either.

Most of my friends around here either went to Iowa or Illinois so our interest like a lot of other people in this area reisdes in the Big Ten. I am an Iowa grad and I do like the college game but i can't justify being a die hard fan of the team just because I lived there for four primarily hazy years. I follow the team and hope for them to do well but I would trade 20 Iowa national championships for one Bears Super Bowl victory that I could remember (I was 3 in 1985) College football to me has always had more of a scoial aspect to it. Games come on on Saturday nights so there is drinking and haning out with your friends moreso than a Sunday afternoon Bears game.

First of all, good call on the Toledo/Purdue game. You predicted that one the Friday before.

Stick to Big Ten football and matchups between top ten teams. If there was a remarkable game outside of that, talk about it after the fact on Monday.

College football supposedly won't sell in Chicago radio, but no one ever talks college football in Chicago, so you never really know. NBA talk doesn't sell too well in Chicago either but B&B have shown a decent enough aptitude on it and a desire to discuss it in order to have an audience who enjoys it.

The problem with college football talk is that there is so much terrain to cover, especially in Chicago. If the floor is going to be opened to any game, the host has to be able to talk about probably any of the teams in the top 10, plus all the Big 10 teams, plus ND.

It's so easy to come off as lazy in this area. When people listen for Bears talk on Monday morning, every major storyline has already been rehashed by earlier shows, print media, ESPN, online sources, etc. There are no surprises. That's why after every game there seems to be two or, at most, three storylines that unanimously emerge. The script is set for the week.

College football gets a lot of coverage, but each individual game does not, especially in an area where fans of one team do not predominate. Hosts have to acquire a lot of information, because the person that calls with Northwestern questions is going to know more about Northwestern than you do, which is probably not true for the Bears. The worst thing that can happen is Matt Rotowald syndrome (see http://score670.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=39592 for this) where the host knows just enough to convince himself that he is speaking intelligently but fools no one else, especially if he risks alienating non-college football fans in the process.

Even if the talk is a level above Rotowaldian nimcompoopery, I worry. I remember during the 2008 season, MJH were having a college football conversation. Talk turned somehow to Alabama. When Jurko talked about how good Alabama's running game was, Mac asked him whether he could name any of the running backs on the Crimson Tide (answer: no). This was a team with future NFLer Glen Coffee and Mark Ingram as a backup. It was painful to hear that...the veneer of expertise was immediately shattered.

That's the biggest danger in talking college football in Chicago, which is why no one does it (Chicago is a "college sports town," notwithstanding some lists to the contrary, just not a fan of any one team in particular). If someone asks why the Northwestern running game has been so bad, you need to talk about it, and a name or two would be nice. What about Michigan's problems in the secondary? Who is that awesome receiver on Indiana? Why don't the put in the back of QB (what's his name?) at Minnesota? This is all basic stuff for fans of Northwestern, or Michigan, or Indiana, or Minnesota; if you flub it, why should they listen?

If you could answer those questions pretty easily and feel like the discussion could go beyond "so should I take the points at Michigan State" (the most banal and unlistenable of sports radio besides maybe fantasy football talk), it's worth doing. If not, well, there will always be an audience for venting against Lovie Smith.

if i'm not mistaken, isn't he on the zook plan where he doesn't really coach? i think he was the linebackers coach or maybe D-coordinator under coach walker, and when walker died NU wanted to get an "inspiring leader" who "bleeds wildcat purple" to rile up the team and help them get over the loss of the coach.... so in steps a young guy not too far removed from his own NU playing days (i think he was one of barnett's guys when they had their big rose bowl year in the 90s?) so it seemed that he was kind of like some sort of motivational speaker / guru / recruiter and whatnot. they got solid offensive and defensive coaches around him and it worked out well... he brings da fire and da pashin and literally has become the focus of their (first-ever?) massive advertising campaign, as he literally has the fist clenched about a second or two before he's about to shout something out in those ads they run on the front page of the trib and suntimes sport sections.

i enjoy him for being a caricature and essentially a mascot for NU... there is legitimate joy flowing through me when i've got the game on yesterday and they convert a third down and i let loose a fist-clenched GO CATS!!! but yeah, i don't take the guy seriously... if i did i reckon i'd be in the same boat as you.

I think a weekly segment with Gerry DiNardo and perhaps a coach highlighting a significant game in the local college scape would suffice most people. I could talk college FB all day but I'm also a bit crazy about a certain team, conference and take in a lot of college football.

I'm a bigfan of Gerry - granted it is his job to know something about each team in the conference but he also has a pretty good handle on the national scene and he's got a good thing going with Terry - good sense of humor.

Denard is ridiculous. Another 200/200 game on Saturday. He's done it twice in five starts. Outside of Denard, only Vince Young did this twice and that was in his whole college career. Denard is just getting started.

He's appointment TV IMO, unreal to watch. This weekend's UM/MSU game will be great.
