Comment May Cost Mike North Planned Senn H.S. Honor

CHICAGO (CBS 2) -- Mike North makes his living by making his opinions known on the radio, and he is no stranger to controversy.

Now, the host of a sports radio talk show is in trouble for something he said on the air.

CBS 2 reports on the honor he was to receive, that may be taken away.

Trenches are being dug for a new drainage system on Senn High School's campus. The renovated softball field sports emerald green, professional grade turf.

The local school council planned to dedicate the field tox Mike north, Senn's most famous alumnus, who never graduated.

But time out, they just learned the wise guy sports broadcaster has a tarnished record.

Last summer, when Korean Chicago Cubs pitcher Jae Kuk Ryu gave up several home runs, effectively losing a game to Atlanta, North reportedly said on his show, "Who was that Chinaman?", a racial slur.

"Chinaman is a charged and offensive term to justify lynchings in Chinatowns and the internment of Japanese Americans in World War II," said Myron Guon of the Asian American institute.

"If we had known those kind of comments he made, that would have been a different story," said Linda England of the Senn local school council.

North apologized, but mocked racial sensitivity. Asian American groups say North is no role model.

But supporters say the hot dog vendor-turned millionaire broadcaster is a success story.

"He could bring some resources into Senn High School maybe even his youth aspect, he could talk to kids in trouble," England said.

Score sports radio management referred all questions to North, who is on vacation and did not return our requests for an interview.

WSCR radio is owned by CBS.

Senn's local school council will reconsider the issue next month. -end-

Kids, it's easy. Drop out of school right now, get a dead-end job, then get REALLY REALLY REALLY lucky. End of story.

Now this a heartwarming Christmas story.

What about the "sombrero" comment.

The drunk driving charges he "beat"

The constant stupidity.

Great for the kids I say

Sounds like his employer is letting him hang himself. Wouldnt you think you'd stand up for your franchise guy? Mike's 15 minutes are winding down.

I think it was a dumbass idea in the first place, but they went through with it and now I have to say it is even dumber to second guess and make yourselves look like bigger idiots than at first.

yeah he said it. he apologized.

Time for someone to write another check? lol

I am guessing the problem is that Bebe initiates all this crap, (Awards, honrs, etc) and she is as nice as nice can be, so they don't even question what Mike is really like and then they start learning more and more and UH OH!

Well, too late this time. finish the damn project.

Didn't someone email this England lady and post the response here? I looked back on the posts and could not find it

That's bullshit. They already knew about the Chinaman, the drunk driving, the not graduating, and they gave it the green light anyway. There are plenty of reasons why you wouldn't name anything tied to academics after Mike North. Unfortunately, they announced the naming of this complex in November, and everything he's said or done that you might classify as tarnished happened long before then. Either they didn't do their homework, or someone is putting pressure on them. Any way you slice it, it's an embarrassment for all involved.

I guess this proves that nodbody listens to him. Even the people who were ready to honor him. We all brought up his "tarnished reccord" when they anounced this idea. They finally did some research. Yeah, Bebe will have to write another check. This is pretty funny.

You guys need to give North a break. I'm sure none of those comments were "purposeable."

This is so much trouble that maybe he might have to give up his show.

Right?

Right on Bigfan!!! Couldnt agree with you more.

After this though, there is no way this will still go through. Can you picture an Asian American Shortstop on the team and his parents get word about the "Legend" that is Mike North? Its Uh-Oh time!

It will be interesting to hear North's comment on this when he gets back - you know he won't be able to leave it alone; perhaps he will make that fatal mistake we all know he has in him.

Anybody ever seen the movie "A Face in the crowd" ? That's the meltdown we need to seal North's fate.

Even without considering North's stupid comments, I thought it was ridiculous to name a high school sports field for a guy who dropped out of the school. In any case, this is great news.

It's not just that. What has he done to be honored? I mean at best he's just a radio host that talks sports. There isn't a Doctor or a nurse to come from Mike's school. Or somebody who's actually helped people that you could honor. And tell that to the Chinese kid at the school when he has to go play on Mike North field. I mean give me a break.

Plus shouldn't the people who are honoring him do a little research on the guy they are honoring. I mean it's not like he's being named a saint but c'mon how can you honor somebody when you don't know any thing about him other then he's on the radio and went to your school.

Beardown

write a nice check to your local boy scouts, with a nice letter about yourself, you might see some honoring come your way.

"Boy Scout Troop #245 of Round Lake Beach, IL would like to Honor Beardown as our Man of the Year"

Then send it to Feder, Ch 5 news and the rest of the LOSER MEDIA TYPES that continue to promote Mike North as the Voice of Chicago Sports Fans, like ABC shoves Jim Belushi on America as the Voice of Chicago Sports.

That needs to be addressed too. Mike North is NOT the voice of Chicago sports. He's the voice of himself.

No one would miss him if he were gone. More people would be happier!

Hey Bebe, Lets put him him in the Chicago Radio Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Someone will take the check!

This is from an email campaign sent out to my gf, who is active in Asian-American stuff in the city. Imho, they have a strong point about the disconnect between Senn's mission of diversity, social conscience, etc. and the celebration of North.

--

Supporters of Asian American Institute:

Much of Asian American Institute’s education work this past month stems from this year’s incendiary incident - Mike North, a sports show host, referred to a Cubs pitcher of Korean descent stating: “Who was that Chinaman?â€

if I was North, I say they came to Me, I said OK, but I will be happy to walk away and donate some money, just so the kids can have a field.

he would get great press out of it.

I don't think he did anything wrong here, but guessing he won't walk away-

Just want SOMEONE to step up and tell eveyrone how this happened and why the CPD and CPS even needed a donation to fix the place as the East side of SENN is about 4 times the size of this field and it is kept in pristine condition.

That would mean their bringing somebody out for a public beatdown. Like everything else, whipping boys are a scarce commodity, and shouldn't be wasted on explaining mismanagement of monies for the field's upkeep.

Which has nothing to do with Pappy, and his checks, his being a magnet for folks' ill will, deservedly or not (well, okay, "deservedly")...

Think Mikey will talk about this when he gets back?

His version will be precious

His version will be precious

This is the statement he should read and release

"I would like to thank everyone at Senn High School for considering me for this honor, but obviousely it has caused an issue with many of the people involved with the school and thier goals.

In light of those issues, I would like the people of Senn High school to name the field after Buck O'Neil and I would still like to make a donation of $50,000 to complete the field."

Once again, I am not blaming Mike for anything here, but I think it is a no win scenario for alot of people involved.

P.S. Bebe, might now slow down on the Mike North awards and honors applications.
