Saw this a couple of days ago. Forgot just how good this show was. I don't recommend it for Terry's Peeps as he is a bit agitated at the moment.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Deer_Hunter

I knew some of the backstory, but did not know that initially Michael was the character that was supposed to lose it in Vietnam and Nick was to back "whole" if you will. Keeping that original story line would have been good also. The setting for the show in the small town was absolutely perfect...if not a bit long. The bar scenes at the beginning, and end accomplish a local bar setting perfectly. I appreciate the randomness of russian roulette and how it is used in this movie.

If you haven't seen it, or not since it was originally released in 1979, put it on your list to see soon. Keep your colostomy bag handy as it is 3:02 in length.

The movie spends way too much time back home IMO. I've watched it one time, and while I appreciate it as a well acted, well directed film, it's so depressing that I've never found the want or need to see it again.

Also, it was John Cazale's last film, as he died from a brain tumor prior to it's release. I always thought he was a great, somewhat underrated, actor.

I'm perfectly calm.

Interesting. That is an absolutely great scene. I tended to look at that song as perfect for where they are in their life and how they feel at that moment. I hear that song and hearken back to the words of SHAKE THAT and his favorite writer Gwendolyn Brooks. I "Live in the Along".

More football talk Peeps

It is a long movie especially a the beginning, and certain aspects can be viewed as depressing. But the concept behind it, and how people deal with the controversy is very well done. When I am involved in a movie enough to put myself into a role(s) being portrayed, I find that the movie was a success...for me. The subject matter was difficult to deal with, but it drew me in more than it pushed me out.

Yeah its a great film, just doesnt have rewatchability. Which probably speaks to how powerful it is.

When I used to hear that song Id think "This is one of the less annoying 'Oldies'"
Now I think: "Man Vietman was baaaaad"

I'm pretty sure every film he was ever in was nominated or won an Academy Award. He's sort of like the Charlie Silvera of actors.

Actually, it was lung cancer that quickly spread to bone cancer. Meryl Streep was engaged to cazale when he died.

Very good film but like others have mentioned, I don't go out of my way to see this one.
I've seen it maybe twice in the last 10 years. If you get emotionally involved in the
movie, by the time it is over you don't want to do shit except drink. Not that there is
anything wrong with that of course.

Saw that when it came out. I was 14. It bored me to death, literally.
Saw it later and liked it.
