Huge things are happening though. Cameron Maybin was traded to the Padres by the Marlins for 2 minor league players.

Phillies just locked up Contreras for 2 years. Maybe he'll be Ryne's ace this year.

Contreras will be 208 years old when that contract is done.

The Marlins have traded Dan Uggla to the Braves for Omar Infante and Mike Dunn.

John Buck signed a three-year deal with the Marlins worth $18 million.

Good news for AJ and bad news for the Sox. Buck did hit 20 home runs for Toronto last year but this is quite a stretch for the Marlins. Last year was by far his best offensive season and Buck is average at best behind the plate.

Braves Acquire Dan Uggla
By Tim Dierkes [November 16 at 4:34pm CST]
The Braves landed one of baseball's most powerful second basemen today, acquiring Dan Uggla from the division rival Marlins for utility man Omar Infante and lefty reliever Mike Dunn.

Uggla, 31 in March, had another fine season in 2010 with a .287/.369/.508 line in 674 plate appearances. Uggla is one season away from free agency, and extension talks with the Marlins broke off after he rejected a four-year, $48MM offer. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports feels that the Braves will attempt to sign him long-term. Martin Prado will step in at third base as Chipper Jones recovers from knee surgery or log innings in left field if necessary, tweets Rosenthal. Uggla should be happy to remain at second base.

Infante, a super-utility type, hit .321/.359/.416 in 506 plate appearances for the Braves this year. He's under contract through 2011 at $2.5MM with another possible $1MM in plate appearance incentives. The loss may put the Braves in the market for a utility player, writes MLB.com's Mark Bowman. Dunn, 26 in May, is a hard-throwing left-handed reliever who came to Atlanta from the Yankees a year ago in the Javier Vazquez deal. Dunn racked up big-time strikeout and walk numbers this year between Triple-A and the Majors. The intra-division asking price for Uggla was expected to be large, but this is a disappointing return for the Marlins. They have succeeded in revamping their bullpen for the long-term, adding Ryan Webb, Edward Mujica, Dustin Richardson, and Dunn in recent trades.

The Cardinals, Blue Jays, Nationals, and Tigers were other reported suitors for Uggla.

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick broke news of the agreement on Twitter, and Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and Mark Bowman of MLB.com provided updates as the story developed.

Cardinals Re-Sign Jake Westbrook
By Mike Axisa [November 16, 2010 at 7:09pm CST]
7:09pm: MLB.com's Matthew Leach has the full financial breakdown. Westbrook will be paid $8MM in 2011 and then $8.5MM in 2012. He receives no buyout if he declines the mutual option, but $1MM if the team declines it. The 2013 option is worth another $8.5MM. The deal also includes a blanket no-trade clause, which Leach indicates was a concession in exchange for no guaranteed third year (Twitter link).

This one is a little bit of a surprise when I was watching the "Baseline", MLB Network's continuous ticker at the bottom of the screen, UMN. The Marlins supposedly offered a $48 million extension to their All-Star second baseman, but he turned it down. I think what's surprising about Dan Uggla getting dealt is where. I know he hit a lot of homers for a mediocre at best Marlins' team last year, but Atlanta's Turner Field isn't the home run haven that Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was back in the day, let alone Miami's currently named SunLife Stadium. This trade is a little bit of a head-scratcher in the sense that Uggla was dealt within the National League East. Then again, Martin Prado shifted over to third base for Atlanta down the stretch once Chipper Jones was shelved...

Bravos have a young guy at 1b named Freddy Freeman, and you never know if a young guy will make the adjustments to play everyday at a consistent level. And Chipper is always a question mark. They can put Uggla at 2b and let a combo of Chipper, Freeman and Prado play 1b/3b. They've been counting on McCann as a cleanup hitter, and he's ok but not a beast. Decent move for a contending team

I thought I saw Freddy very, very briefly due to injuries that the Braves had suffered down the stretch en route to the N.L. Wildcard. Not sure where things stand with Derrek Lee and Troy Glaus, who also saw time at first base for Atlanta this past season... I thought I also heard the word retirement and Chipper in the same sentence as well...

Buck is a 30 year old catcher who had a career year last year for the Jays, but his career average is more like .240 14 HRs and 52 RBIs per year. Seems like overpaying to me. He's average on defense, throwing out 26% of runners.

I didn't remember the place having that short of a porch, but the Jays stadium is the new Coors Field. Everyone's power stats on that team are really inflated.

Is this an admittance that they really need a full time DH last season and not the Kotsay/Pierre/Quentin experiement?

I think it is by Kenny - my assumption is that Ozzie still wants a guy that he can play in the field - perhaps one that hits better than .179 with RISP.

The White Sox interest in Hideki Matsui makes you wonder if the rotating DH was such a smart idea last year. That said, The SCORE's Chris "The Ranger" Rongey will tell you that for certain veterans like Paul Konerko, for instance, the rotating DH kept their bat in the lineup even though it meant a day off from the field.

Until the cubs are in a pennant race (years from now) and Barmes inexplicably hits 5 home runs in a 3 game series for the 4th place Astros as they sweep the Cubs out of the Wildcard race in late september.

According to the NY Daily News, Jeter is seeking a 5-6 year deal paying him about 20 million a season while the Yanks are going to offer 3 for 50.

Jeter is crazy overplaying his hand here. He's not even worth the 3 for 50 the Yanks are going to offer him.

It would never happen, but I would laugh my ass off if the negotiations got so ugly that his foolish pride forced him into playing for the Orioles or Tigers.

Id be ok with him being at 2nd for a double play combo with Starlin Castro for about 2.5M a year. He is pretty much Theriot with less power
