It's the other way around, but Spiegs didn't ask.

The team wanted to give him a golden shower and thought that's what it was.

Well, nobody died, so this thing would have to be viewed as a success. That Illini back ran for 320. And Illinois ran the ball 70 times. That has to be some sort of record. Sometimes you don't even have 70 offensive plays in a game.

Shouldn't MUD and Dr. Ken and IB and BigFan be back home by now? Not like they're gonna do anything else in this cow-town.

We need first-person reports!!!

I've been more sober before, so forgive misspellings and the like.

Fun time, good experience. The direction thing went off pretty seamlessly, except perhaps only on the Northwestern Pick 6 were everyone had to trudge the other way. About 70% Northwestern fans, which surprised me, but lots of people you could tell have never, ever gone to an NU game before; lots of blank purple shirts, Ravens jerseys, etc.

In a lot of ways, this entire weekend couldn't have gone worse for Northwestern. I know the official line will be that this was a unique experience and they were glad to be a part of it, but this game will be remembered nationally as one of two things: 1.) the game that Northwestern couldn't even measure the damn field, or 2.) the game Mikel LeShoure left shoe prints on their back. This was your moment, but I guess by now, Northwestern fans should be used to losing bowl-type games.

It's pretty clear now that all the "Chicago's Big Ten" team stuff was specifically directed at Illinois and this game. They decked out everything in purple, pretended Illinois didn't exist, didn't allow the Marching Illini to play and exiled them to the corner furthest from the field. I think the final Illinois TD was an FU TD, which I didn't have a problem with.

Also: Illinois beats Northwestern, NIU, and SIU in the same season. That's like Florida beating FSU, Miami, and USF in a season, right? Same concept?

Finally, Spiegel is pretty weird. He was only in his seat for a combined 45 minutes or so. He spent the majority (no hyperbole) of that type typing on his phone. He was two seats away from me, but the seat between us was empty and the seat next to him was empty for most of the game too. He didn't get there until about halfway through the first quarter (and the first quarter was looooong), and he left before the fourth quarter even started. He had no emotion whatsoever for either team during the game.

The only time I even noticed the one-way field was the XP after the pick/6 and at the end of the quarters, when instead of switching sides and walking down the field, the teams just stood there. That was a little strange, but no big deal.

other than pissing off people that thought they had bought good seats, the "one-way" play really should have no effect on the game. If anything, it's probably more fair than normal because both teams face the same wind conditions all day.

Did you have to go halfsies with him on your seat to give him enough room to sit?

Actually, the spot between us was empty. Maybe Mac had to do his hair?

I recounted my Tale of Spiegel, such as it is, above. I honestly don't know why he bothered going to the game.

Irish Boy was way too harsh in his assessment. It was an absolutely fun time. Northwestern did a spectacular job at making this a NU home game. The beer tent was great. The bands wer fun. The ESPN Gameday experience was a blast.

I find it hilarious that people are so quick, like Irish Boy, to label this a failure. It was absolutely not a failure. NU fans flew from all over the country, often times with their kids, to see a pretty amazing game. The direction thing was a COMPLETE non-issue. That was definitely the consensus of all the people I was with.

The outcome of the game, while disappointing, wasn't entirely unexpected. Illinois is a good team. And I can see how some Illinois fans were angry that their seats weren't as good as ours and that their band had to sit farther away. But we gave up a home game for this marketing experiment. I was really please with how the stadium looked. It felt like it was supposed to... Like a home game.

I had a great time. I soaked it in all day. Met up with Damien Anderson and D'Wayne Bates, two of my favorite Cats. It was fun talking about the old days. NSJ and I tried to meet up, but just didn't work out. I'm in recovery mode today.

Posted mine in the Shoutouts, while I think some things could have been better, was in no way a complete failure. It was overall a very good atmosphere, decent game, but not even close to a "failure"

Can someone point me to this post where IB said it was failure?

I see him ripping Northwestern, but I don't see where he said the experience was a failure.
