Maybe some people will take exception to this. That is fine, because I admit, I probably am ignorant when it comes to college sports.

I went to a small private university and didn't care about sports - they didn't even have a football team.

The allure of college football to me is more attractive than the NFL today, but I've never had a solid vested interest in any of the Illinois schools - in any sport except when I jumped on the Illini bandwagon the year they played for the national championship in basketball a few years ago.

How does someone who doesn't really have an alma mater to root for in college sports become interested (or choose) in a particular college team? From my perspective, the Illinois schools seem kind of silly, compared to schools like Ohio St., Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, or the powerhouse teams from the SEC or Big 12.

The one team I could see myself getting into, the Wildcats, primarily because they are in Chicago and I could attend their games, seem not to have much of a buzz. You can't find any of their apparel anywhere, even on their website (weak selection), and their basketball games are hardly on TV.

I'm interested in seeing how are people became fans of their particular college teams for either football or basketball.

And one final question -- can you have a favorite team in college football, then have another team for college basketball?

I never got into the Irish to be honest. Don't hate them or dislike them, just feel kind of blah about them. Never appealed to me.

Western Illinios defeated Coastal Carolina 17-10 in the 1st round of the Division 1-AA football playoffs today. Yes, 1-AA manages to do the impossible. They have a playoff system for college football that actually decides the champion on the field instead of by a computer. Amazing.

i favor a playoff myself, and have always though an eight team playoff scenario for 1-A, 1-AA and 1-AAA that mirror each other schedule wise, culminating in 1 day of championship games (for instance 1-AAA at noon, 1-AA at 4pm, and 1-A in prime time) would be cool. that being said, im not a college football nut who watches 20 bowl games during bowl season, so i wouldnt be missing much by streamlining the bowl schedule.
