Looks like baseball is expanding the playoffs, which is stupid, but whatever. I don't have a problem with making the playoffs longer, necessarily, though something has to give; you can't have 9 month seasons.

Rather than setting up the MLB playoffs as a tournament, why not do a second mini-season in each league? Start on September 15th or so. Take the top six teams in each league and have them play a three game series against each of the other (15 extra games per team). The team with the better record can play at home. At the end of the 15 games, take the teams with the best record in each league and play the World Series.

I think that this system would give more of an advantage to teams that did well in the regular season (as many as 15 home games), and would also test entire rosters more, since teams would probably still have to use 5 starters. MLB could just cut the interleague games from the regular season, and there would be no balance problems. This system would help MLB out by making more teams part of the playoff chase, but wouldn't punish top seeds either.

Note: I know this will never happen. Just a thought though.

EDIT: I do like the idea. Im all for the playoffs more closely resembling the reg season.

The MLB should take Bill Simmons idea for the NBA playoffs to prevent tanking.

I think he calls it the "Interesting as hell tournament". Take all of the bottom teams and give them a chance to make the final playoff spot in a mini tournament that will last 1-2 weeks. Chop off a few games from the regular season, and give fans something to care about in late September.
