Sorry to hear it, Bob. Come to the Danny Mac remote and we'll talk a little Reinsdouche and Racketts.

Pitching absolutely, but you need the power bats to win, Bob. Name a Yankee team that didn't win with power. Red Sox, Phillies too. You gotta pick it up for sure, but even if you don't have HR hitters you at least need gap hitters and guys who can hit with men on base consistently.

You have to play to your ballpark. Red Sock and Mariner tried going on a defense- first philosophy and it hasn't exactly worked out. Everyone wants to look at the Tampa Rays model, accumulating a shitload of draft picks and develop a lot of homegrown talent. Granted their development system has been incredible, but you don't stockpile that many draft picks without sucking for quite a long time.

Well, that whole Red Sox "move to defense" was a fucking joke. Cameron was hurt all year and the "defensive" signing of Beltre turned into their best overall hitter.

I would have been there with bells on but I'm heading back East for my kids birthday and to shag her home for Christmas......I'm also heading into the Garden for the 1st time to see the Blueshirts vs. the hockey team that Reinsdouche wanted to buy....if he could screw all the taxpayers of Glendale.

Sorry to hear it Bob. As a tribute, for the rest of the day, I will blame Jerry Reinsdorf for shortchanging the Chicago Bulls on a 7th title.

when i first saw this thread i had excitedly thought that the white sox went out and signed rafael soriano. i believe he signed a one year deal (?) with tampa last year and proceeded to kick a sufficient amount of ass as a closer. if the sox then, technically, got their very own soriano in the wake of jenks leaving, i'd be quite good with that.

i was fortunate enough to do the garden the last weekend of 2007, bulls/knicks. it's a wonderful spot. the default beer is heineken, and it's location is literally right up in the middle of the shit. staying out in long island, me and the girl pop the LIRR and drink the whole way there (the LIRR is more civilized than the metra in that regard: you can drink whenever the fuck you want on there), hit up rose's pizza for a slice of white cheese pizza, then walk a combined 5 minutes meet up my other friend and i'm at the mecca of basketball.

the knicks were awful, there were fire isiah chants, and i remember watching ben wallace look immaculate with his fro.... out by the free throw line on countless "rebound opportunities". the bulls still won by 16.

LOL... what do you expect from a guy who calls himself AGGRAVATED?

The difference between the Cubs and Sox signings of Soriano and Dunn is quite simple: The Sox use a DH Bob. C'mon now..... And they're paying a fraction of the price for him. Soriano is making $19Million this year. Dunn won't make anywhere near that in Year One - and will never hit it in any other year of his deal.

I'm fine with it....I think what was really pissing me off was Bernstein's giddy reaction and the underlying "Stats are Everything" "thinking Man's" view of the game he always is projecting.
Bring back Konerko and do some more tinkering.

I agree bernstein thinks Dunn is far greater than he is. What guys like bernstein don't want to acknowledge is that situations matter. Now, if you're a GM setting up a team, it probably makes sense to look at Javy Vazquez' numbers and expect that he's capable of getting better results from them. But maybe he won't. And anyway, we're not GMs. We have no need to look at players from such a perspective. Joe Carter came up with men on. He drove them in. I don't think it makes sense to compare him to a guy who may have hit more but wasn't in a position to drive guys in. Both guys are who they are. It would be like saying George H.W. Bush would have been a greater president than George Washington if he had been presented with Washington's circumstances. And I don't know how you can say something like that. Men are made- at least in part- by their circumstances. Adam Dunn should score more and drive in more but he's played on shitty teams. And I should have a trust fund but my dad was born working class.

You know RFDC, I saw your posts on IU hoops and I was taken aback on how cogent your thoughts were. So now I have to ask, who borrows your log-in to discuss that shit?

The Nationals actually did get their own Soriano:

Jayson Werth, 7 yrs., $126M.

holy shit wtf lol omfg barbeque!!@

good for jayson werth... a late bloomer i think he was a converted catcher and he made the most of some chance to play in the bandbox there in the middle of a stacked lineup. he has just attained multi-generational wealth.

that said, there's a pretty good chance domonic brown will make people forget about ~2.5 good years of jayson werth in philly. at least the tigers didn't get him, because even though i think he isn't the best money to spend on, he'll still have a few good years before that migrates towards badmoneyville.
