I get my god daughter and her brother a gift card for target every year for Christmas.
They both love it using their "credit cards" but, she's 9 and he's 6.

Now we have the wonderful gift card solution. You get a gift card for said person for a place you both enjoy. IF they don't bring anything you use it yourself and if they do you're covered.

Also you can have a few just in case you have an unexpected guest or such. A place most people shop at you enjoy yourself.

Caution! Some gift cards have a secret void date when they expire if not used (certificates usually have one clearly written on them..) I lost some balance on a card I got from work earlier this year because they had sat on it so long before giving them out.

I've done gift cards almost exclusively the last two years and I haven't heard a complaint yet...

Gift cards are the best. My favorite are Whole Foods, Jewel, and Target.

My kids love them because then they get the stuff I won't buy. That's how they got the voice changer.

Their voice will change on it's own eventually. What a waste.

One of my brothers is saving up to buy some musical equipment he really wants so he asked for gift cards for a music center he wants to buy it from. Everyone is doing this. He will have enough from gift cards to add to what he's saved to be able to go and get it after Christmas.

I don't expect people to give me presents but I would feel bad if someone brought me something and I had nothing for them.

Also there always seems to be someone who winds up coming to a get together you didn't expect to see.

If you get a gift card for target you can use the money you save by using it for necessities there somewhere else.

My friend got VISA gift cards from family ad friends to use towards her trip to Ireland. IT turned out you can't do that. So she used them for her groceries and other bills and used the money she would have spent on those things for her trip.

Gift cards take the fun out of Christmas & gift giving. They are thoughtless & sterile & really have no meaning to either the giver or receiver. I suggested to my Family that we ban gift cards this year & actually shop for gifts for everyone.

While we are on the subject of things parents won't buy...

My daughter is disappointed that you Spaulding, the Alcohol Fairy, hasn't sauntered over to the Best Buy with a case of beer or a bottle of vodka either.

I told her I would pass along Merry Christmas to you and your family anyway.

I love reading these posts , espeically the ones that explain what I can do with a giftcard. I can buy something at that store. Really?

Back to my point, can't I do that with cash too?

Somehwere along the way America has been duped into thinking a "Gift Card" is more thoughtful than a $50 bill.

I hear what you are saying, but if we are talking about the Visa gift cards, you can use those online...something you can't do with cash...

The only thing I can say to this is that it shows the person took the time to go to the store to buy that person a gift card from a store that person might like to shop at.

I bought a couple gift cards this year. One for my wife at a store she likes to shop at and one for her 9 year old cousin who I have in the grab bag this year.

With my wife, am I really expected to go pick out a sweater for her at J Crew or something like that? No but I want to buy her something that I know she will like and use.

And with the cousin he wanted a paintball gun and that aint happening. He got a gift card to Gamestop.

Ha, exactly. Can't even imagine the response I would get if I gave my wife $50 in cash.

But I did have a good idea last year. I found a website that let you embed someone's face on a $100 dollar bill. So I uploaded a pic of Bucky Chris Jr., printed out a couple and gave it to her (with the idea that she could spend that money on whatever she wants).

Yes I realize the fact that the money is technically hers anyway, but she liked the thought and kept the money for the baby book.

She at the one on 75th? I can't just wander around the store asking young women if they know Rozner and want some booze.

We're going to lose our baby sitter in about 9 months. If she wants the job it's a good one. Great pay and after the kids are in bed she can fix herself a drink. She can have a boy over to make out with him too.

I believe it would be something along the lines of "A $50 bill? What am I, you're goddamn whore?"

No thanks.

Kramer: Yeah. Open it.

Elaine: Oh Kramer... (She opens it) The bench! You got me the bench that I wanted! (Jerry looks irritated)

Kramer: That's pretty good, huh?

Jerry: Great.

Kramer: Remember when we were standing there and she mentioned it? I made a mental note of it.

Jerry: Well goody for you.

Kramer: Oh yeah, I'm very sensitive about that. I mean, when someone's birthday comes up, I keep my ears open. So what'd you get her?

Jerry: 182 bucks.

Kramer: Cash? You gotta be kidding. What kind of gift is that? That's like something her uncle would get her.

I agree. I much prefer seeing green than plastic.

It's a great moneymaker though. More than 10% of the value of all gift cards are not redeemed. The 10%+ spread of the billions spent on gift cards is free money to the gift card companies, the distributors, and the retailers who get a cut of every one they sell.

So for those who buy gift cards, know that on average more than 10% of what you spend is not going to be used. It's the price you pay for thinking gift cards are better than cash.

Bullshit, the person was in the checkout line and said "Oh yeah, I gotta get ____ something"

I am OK with the VISA crad, AMEX etc, something that does not say, you have to go to Best Buy.

Yesterday I went to Home Depot and bought a Wet/Dry Vac, came home, wrapped it up, and presented it to my wife as an early Christmas gift. Now when she gets a $25 gift card for the Shell station it will be comparably better! That's a gift card solution.
