OH FUCK. i was butthurt to read rangers blogs about the re-signing of vlad, as people down there took his july1st-2ndweekofseptember swoon as SERIOUS FUCKING BUSINESS and overlooked .300/29/115 in order to start making the case for jim thome, amongst others.

i would love for vlad to end up back with the rangers, as i want him to get as close to 3000 hits / 500HR as he can so he can be for-sure HOF.... otherwise, shit. are the angels done with matsui? could a kind-of-homecoming be in the works, with the hope that he can rake for a few years and go in the HOF in an angels cap?

Uggla signs an extension with the Braves - 5 years/62M

The Tigers agreed to a one-year, $3M deal with Brad Penny.

A lot of money for a guy who only managed to make 9 starts last season. With all the money the Tigers had to spend this off season it's hard to believe this is the only move they've made to the starting rotation.

It's a pity that Bully Hendry hamstrung the Cubs with so many bad deals cuz that's the kind of player I would have loved to see get overpaid on the mighty mighty Cooooo. Sure, his defense is anything but spectacular and you can pencil him in for 150 strikeouts every year, but he gives you almost-eerily consistent offense and he doesn't miss games. I had him in a fantasy league a couple'a years ago, dumping Daisuke on someone to get him cheap after an abysmal start; he eventually rebounded to get right to his annual 30/90 clip. Last year he hit .287 and sure enough his annual 25-30 doubles and 30 HRs earned him 105 RBIs. Those numbers hearken back to the golden era of roided up 2Bmen such as Bret Boone and Rich Aurilia.

Having that kind of production at 2B allows you more flexibility in the outfield and at the corner infield positions... if you have a Dan Uggla type you can try to find a more balanced 3B to replace A-Ram, as opposed to likely trying to find another masher because the Cubs are going to have exactly 0 power hitters under contract for next season. Yeehaw! Can I have my 2012 season ticket invoice early plz?

The Yankees have agreed to terms with free agent reliever Rafael Soriano on a 3yr/$35M deal.

They couldn't overspend to improve the rotation so they overspend to improve the bullpen. Crazy money for a setup man and they give up their first round pick to the Rays.

Jeff Francis agreed to 1yr/$2M deal plus incentives with the Kansas City Royals.

The Royals certainly could use a more reliable starter (Francis threw 104 innings in 2010) but this isn't a terrible deal considering Brandon Webb received $3M guaranteed for not pitching an inning last year and 4 innings in 2009.

The rich get richer, Keyser. While Rafael Soriano likely becomes a setup man for now in the Bronx, even the great Mariano Rivera can't shut down opposing hitters forever. The deal doesn't to make sense right now, but I wonder if the Yankees may have their closer of the future in Soriano...

The rich do get richer SHARKY but that $200M+ payroll is going to run out AJ Burnett, Ivan Nova and Sergio Mitre every 5th day. I'm not sure even the Yankees offense can consistently score enough runs to get those two the ball with late inning leads.
