Denies QB Bolden his request to transfer.

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=5987457

Penn State quarterback Rob Bolden's father says coach Joe Paterno has denied his son's request to transfer.

Robert Bolden Sr. said he wasn't expecting Paterno to turn down the quarterback in a meeting Tuesday. It's unclear what Bolden will do next, with spring semester classes starting Monday.

"I'm pretty upset," Bolden told the Altoona Mirror Tuesday. "I didn't understand why he would want me to stay if I didn't want to be there. I was looking to get out and get a release, but he thinks otherwise."

Bolden was the first true freshman to open the season at quarterback in Paterno's 45-year head-coaching tenure with the Nittany Lions (7-6). He started eight games, but suffered a concussion vs. Minnesota. He then lost the job two weeks later to sophomore Matt McGloin after getting pulled vs. Northwestern.

Bolden Sr. said his son was only interested in playing at the FBS level.

"We were under the impression he would get a release and find himself in a better situation," Bolden Sr. said.

He also said Bolden was wary of talk by coaches that there would be an open competition for the job come spring practice.

"If I do come back, for that time me being there, I'll take advantage of what I have to do and not be a problem for the program," Bolden said to the Altoona Mirror. "But I'm not looking to do that at all."

That program is about to walk through the desert. Thank goodness we gerrymandered the conferences so that they wouldn't feel isolated! (also, thank goodness Illinois got the conference where Penn State is one of the supposed powers).

Penn State is about to implode. You can sense another down period coming.

I used to think that Penn State was a sleeping giant and when Paterno left that they'd give big bucks to a big name who make them a dominant team. I am not sure that is true any more especially since Ohio State isn't going anywhere and the road to the BCS for Penn State now goes through them.

Joe should have been gone about 5 years ago. He'll probably be back next year too.

They are going to lose the 'coaches in waiting' soon as well.

Haven't they already? Wasn't the guy the U just hired one of them?

Bradley is currently on the staff and rumored to be one of the lead candidates at UConn.

Vanderlinden is on the staff and rumored to be considered for other jobs.

I would not be surprised if they threw money at a big name when Paterno leaves...they will get a 'donation' from a booster. This is a school that just got two huge (HUGE donations from boosters to A: rebuild a wresting program to be one of the national powers and B. They just got a 88 million dollar donation from a single booster to start a division 1 hockey program. There will be someone out there to back a Brinks truck up to someone front door. From what I hear from the Penn State meatheads around campus, the hope is that this will be Joe's last year and then they will throw whatever they can at Urban Meyer. I don't see that happening but they will go after some big name. Wanny come on down!
