Well, look at it this way...if you buy it and don't like it, I'll probably buy it to have a second copy...

I do not like that the engine is still based on Fallout and Oblivion...it should be completely new, not a revamp.

We already know that Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be running on an engine that was based in part on technology we've seen in both Oblivion and Fallout 3 – but it's not the Gamebryo engine. Comments from Executive Producer, Todd Howard, lead us to believe the bulk of the engine is completely new – but based around ideas generated through Gamebryo. We're talking, effectively, a new house built on the raw foundations of the old one.

Sounds fine to me...the engine isn't competely busted, so why completely toss it out? Keep the core parts that work and build on that.

Again, it's a new engine.

Say Gamebryo sucks...I'm sure as hell not going to waste any time defending it...but you can't tell me it was completely busted to the point that everything from it should be tossed out...

Game Informer revealed the cover for their February issue...simple...the Elder Scrolls emblem on a black background...I can't wait for my copy to arrive.

But what's really cool is on the back...a couple stanzas of text written in "Dragon Tongue"

Game Informer has a feature on their website where you can decode what the writing says...I could have waited for someone else to do the work for me, but what the hell, so I figure out what it says...

DOVAHKIIN DOVAHKIIN
NAAL OK ZIN LOS VAHRIIN
WAH DEIN VOKUL MAHFAERAAK AHST VAAL
AHRK FIN NOROK PAAL GRAAN
FOD NUST HON ZINDRO ZAAN
DOVAHKIIN FAH HIN KOGAAN MU DRAAL

AHRK FIN KEL LOST PRODAH
DO VED VIING KO FIN KRAH
TOL FOD ZEYMAH WIN KEIN MEYZ FUNDEIN
ALDUIN FEYN DO JUN
KRUZIIK VOKUN STAADNAU
VOTH AAN BAHLOK WAH DIIVON FIN LEIN

Translated to human tongue reads...

Dragonborn Dragonborn
By His Honor Is Sworn
To Keep Evil Forever At Bay
And The Fiercest Foes Rout
When They Hear Triumph's Shout
Dragonborn For Your Blessing We Pray

And The Scrolls Have Fortold
Of Black Wings In The Cold
That When Brothers Wage War Come Unfurled
Alduin Bane Of Kings
Ancient Shadow Unbound
With A Hunger To Swallow The World

edit: btw, the first stanza is what is sung by the chorus at the end of the announcement trailer...very cool.

This game will be amazing. I didn't think Oblivion could be improved upon, but it looks like they might. I do hope they tweak the NPC level-ups. I would like to be able to dominate portions of the game through leveling without everyone else doing the same.

Anything can theoretically be improved upon, but Oblivion is the best RPG I've ever played, hands down... mainly due to the depth and freedom.

What is the "something" you are referring to? And what RPGs, on any system, do you consider better?

The Witcher. Mass Effect. multiple Final Fantasy games. original Kingdom Hearts. Chrono Trigger. Ocarina of Time. Star Ocean.

In terms of the 'somethings':

Excellent graphics - but the same textures / terrain were repeated endlessly and poor facial animation.
Fantastic scope on a living, breathing world - but the AI was terrible.
Very broad leveling system - with poor ways of increasing stats.
Many quests - with numerous bugs and continuity issues.

To each their own. Relative to the gaming/graphics of their time, I might agree on a couple of these - Chrono Trigger and FF7 - but considering the graphics and depth of today's games, I still consider Oblivion better. I can't stand any FF games made in the past 5 years.

In regard to the flaws you dislike, I will agree on two - the leveling system is too broad and forces you to "plan" your leveling to maximize your stats, which sucked, but hopefully that will be corrected. Also, I do not like the automatic leveling of ALL NPCs so that every fight is a struggle, regardless of how much you have accomplished.

I thought the fact that every NPC in this MASSIVE game had its own dialogue was a feat in itself. I can't quibble with the facial animations.

I also can't complain about the number of quests. It seemed overwhelming at times, but this seems like a byproduct of the freedom you had in the game and the depth of the storyline. If they take those quests away or only make them accessible during certain portions of the game, the downside outweighs the benefits.

Less buggy, yes.
It was also far more unique.

And why did I leave off Fallout 3 under my top RPG's...my bad.

The fact that I've experienced far more bugs with Fallout 3 than I did with Oblivion, even though I spent far less time playing it tells me the less buggy part isn't correct, but to each his own...

So for anyone who is mildly interested in Skyrim and has yet to partake in some sweet Elder Scrolls action, this just dropped yesterday...

http://www.platformnation.com/2011/07/12/the-elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-5th-anniversary-edition-now-available/

30 bucks gets you Oblvion with two expansions, some swag, and a 10 dollar credit towards Skyrim...

...pretty sure I'll be picking it up, just for collections sake...

lipid... I've actually never played Oblivion for the same reason I've never played a MMORPG... which coincidentally is the reason I've never tried cocaine. I figured I would like it way too much and wouldn't be able to stop. However, that all comes to an end with Skyrim. I have a feeling I may get divorced, fired, and worse after playing this game. Hell, I may need a little cocaine to go along with it to keep me going during the day since I won't have slept the night before.

Hey man, someone has to buy it, it might as well be you.

In 10 years you might be able to eBay the dragon statue for $16 less shipping costs.

10 years? They'll be up there for that price in 10 months...at least judging by past special editions (still remember seeing Best Buy littered with Halo 3 Legendary Editions for 80 bucks a year after the game came out...)
