TALK HEATS UP OF LOVIE TO 'BOYS

There is increasing chatter in NFL circles that Bears coach Lovie Smith will, after the Super Bowl, make a move to become the coach of the Dallas Cowboys.

As one source explained it to us, the Cowboys gig is Smith's dream job. It's hardly a stretch, given that Smith grew up in Big Sandy, Texas.

Ten years ago, then-Patriots coach Bill Parcells jumped to the Jets after a Super Bowl loss. The Jets later compensated the Patriots for acquiring the team's head coach while he was still under contract.

Whether Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is willing to send a draft pick or two (and some cash) to the Bears is a different issue. But if Lovie refuses to do an extension and tells the Bears he wants to leave, they might not have any choice but to take whatever is on the table. Lovie is now holding the cards, and shame on the Bears for not locking him up a long time ago.

North brought this up today and asked for a clarification of NFL's tampering rules. I think that is a great point. How "direct" to conversations or feelers have to be to constitute tampering. There is a lot of smoke here all of a sudden to make me think there may be fire. And, as North said, if it gets ugly, the Bears could make Smith serve out the final year of his contract.

Add another one to the long list of Bears contract/hiring fiascos.

I'd take two first rounders for Lovie...in a second.

I would think that his best chance of going back to the Superbowl next year would be with the Bears. He ain't stoopid. He'll be back, and Angelo will take good care of him this year.

Face it, two weeks until the next game. Football writers have to write something, and bullshit like this comes out every year between Conference championships and superbowls.

Then the chant of "We want more head" can return to soldier field. I did not understand what people were saying as a 10 year old but I'm sure my father was cringing.

This discussion has to fall under the category right now of "Things Not to Worry About."

If Dallas is his dream job, I don't think there is much the Bears can do. They can offer him a fair deal, but if his heart is there - like many other coaches with a team they grew up loving or played for - he'll eventually end up there. We can all agree that he is worth more than his current paper, but the Bears know that too. He may cause a bidding war, but if his heart is in Dallas, he will go there eventually. I don't foresee it happening next year, via a compromise, but I'm not going to let it worry me for the next couple of weeks.

Look, all the Bears have to do is tell Jerry Jones to f off. He's under contract until next year. Jones will make a choice before the Super Bowl any way.

The Bears will end up giving him 4.5 million 4 year extension. While riping up next year. If Lovie wants to hold out for 6 million (hey he'll probrally get that). Then the Bears will just let him ride out the last year at 1.2 and say good bye. Sure they could afford it but sweaty Teddy won't give in. Lovie hold most of the leverage now. But the Bears own a little because he's making 1.2 next year. If they tear that up 4.5 x 4 will be fine for Lovie because he'd be making Pappy money next year anyway.

I was against giving him an extension during the year but that would have saved the Bears money. Had they done it mid season they could have got him for 3 million a year times 4 years.

Beardown, why do you believe that? It's not like there are a bunch of can't miss candidates out there that jones has to get his hands on before someone else. The only can't miss is Bill Cowher right now and Dallas is the only team that'd have a shot at him anyway. Hell, is any other NFL team looking for a coach anymore? I think we're down to Dallas. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Jones waited it out until after the Superbowl. Maybe he goes after Lovie Smith, Ron Rivera, or even more of a longshot in Tom Moore. Since Parcells waited so long, Jones now has some unwanted flexibility here. Russ Grimm isn't going anywhere anytime soon either. While I don't think Lovie coaches Dallas next year, I certainly don't think its a given Jones has a new Cowboy coach by Superbowl kickoff.

You're right Woody. But I just heard sweaty Teddy say that he will not allow the Cowboys to talk to Lovie. He basically threatened to file a league grievence if they pursue Lovie. The way he said it I beleive him. Lovie's gonna get his extension.

I'm fine with that. Make Jerry Jones pay for some of Lovie's contract with a fine.
