You're not supposed to draft for need but it's not like they'd be reaching for one of those college pitchers. Hard to believe they pass on all those guys for a high school corner player.

That was a reach by the Padres. They have been linked to him for a while but all the 'experts' thought they'd get him at pick #25.

The Cubs won't pay him and he will star for The U and then get drafted by the Reds in 3 years and then shove it up the Cubs' asses for the next 10.

No way. This draft is loaded and they're sure to get a less talented player next year. The Cubs pick isn't bad it's just interesting that they chose a high school position player over a college pitcher.

Nimmo is a bit of a risk because he's raw but he grades out off the charts.

Summary :
Baez has crazy bat speed and big future power potential, but needs to find a position and show a little more energy on the field.

At the plate Baez unleashes on every pitch with a max-effort swing that, when he squares a ball up, produces loud, hard contact. He doesn't shorten up or ever use another approach beyond "swing with all you've got," and he can get too power-happy and start to swing uphill.

He still projects to hit for plus power, but the potential to hit for average will depend on his willingness to cut down his swing when needed.

On defense, he has a plus arm and quick transfers, meaning he should be able to play third base if (as is likely) he outgrows shortstop. He has also caught a little in the past, and I know scouts who like him there, but the general sentiment is that he's not interested in the position.

But the biggest issue for Baez is how he acts on the field. He's more than just flashy, he's very showy, and he doesn't always play like he's fully prepared or engaged. He has as much potential impact with the bat as any prep player in this draft, but the need for a new position and questions about his on-field demeanor are going to hold down his stock.

I keep seeing Baez being elevated significantly higher than this spot in some mock drafts, and I simply don’t think, with all due respect, that he is that type of player, in anything but a strict signability situation. For Tampa Bay, with its menagerie of 10 draft picks between slots 24 and 60, it’s a very good fit, however.

So he will come cheap. Typical Ricketts.

This is my scouting report:

Javier Baez SS Arlington County Day HS: Baez is moving up draft charts because of his advanced bat and plus power potential. Baez has very good bat control and excellent pitch recognition. He has a good frame and generates consistent hard contact to all fields. Baez has smooth movements and soft hands but limited range. He has an average arm and is an average runner. Baez projects as a third baseman or possibly a second baseman and a top of the order hitter.

Matt Barnes at 19 sure sounds good reading these draft reports:

Churchill: The Red Sox getting Barnes here is a coup. He's a potential No. 1 or 2 starter and already possesses a 93-97 mph fastball and potentially plus curveball. He holds his velocity late into games and could get to the majors quickly, especially if he gets his feet wet out of the bullpen. Boston has more picks coming on later this evening, but this is a tremendous start as most didn't believe Barnes would get this far.

Can't say I trust Tim Wilkens much after that Hayden Simpson pick last year.

Not only does Tampa have a million picks they get a fucking steal with their first pick in Taylor Guerrieri. This draft is loaded but it's still hard to believe he fell this far.

Joe Panek was a reach by the Giants. Especially with Levi Michael still on the board.

Lots of high school arms still available and why is Mikie Mahtook still out there??
