You really don't know who Gary Peters and Jimmy Wynn are?

No idea. I'm not 60.

What does how old one is have to do with being willfully ignorant?

i've said it before and i'll say it again: out of principle, i will never listen to the show because it's called "sports and torts." for some odd reason that stupid-ass name offends my sensibilities so much i will never ever EVER support it.

oh and i don't care about your guests either, but that's not as big of a deal.

I don't know whether you are or aren't. Maybe you're not a baseball fan. If you are, I would think you'd be interested. Maybe you should listen to Spada's show. I'm not 110 years old but I know who Red Grange and Hurry Up Yost were.

There's probably a good chance he'll have Ron Hunt on one of these days.

I have heard of plenty of old baseball players...just not these. I usually recognize a name or 2 from his list of guests, but not this time. When is Hack Wilson on?

I wasn't trying to bust your balls. I was just surprised that you had never heard of the Toy Cannon. And Peters was one of the better lefthanders in the game for a few years.

I honestly thought they were golfers at first before looking them up.

I always wanted Wynn to be a Cub.
He hit tons of warning track fly balls down in the Astrodome.
He would have hit 50 a year at Wrigley.

You really get that Peters and Wynn were "average" from looking at their numbers?

They are average and 2011 Juan Pierre is bad, yes.

Gary Peters

Johnny Antonelli (961)
Mike Scott (954)
Ray Culp (950)
Al Downing (949)
Sonny Siebert (947)
Jon Matlack (943)
Bob Ojeda (941)
Sid Fernandez (941)
Jose Rijo (940)
Steve Barber (937)

Jim Wynn

Mike Cameron (924)
Ron Gant (919)
Tom Brunansky (892)
Bobby Murcer (887)
Reggie Sanders (880)
Brady Anderson (879)
Rick Monday (876)
Frank Thomas (874)
Sal Bando (871)
Larry Parrish (869)

You're a moron who doesn't know what he's talking about. Jimmy Wynn was arguably a better offensive player than Roberto Clemente.

I'll let you guess who is who.

I know who is who. The guy with more homers and a higher OBP who played the majority of his career in places that were notoriously far more difficult for hitters than Forbes Field is Jimmy Wynn.

I guess no one needs to have heard of them. But wouldn't you find it odd if you occasionally found yourself in arguments about Big Ten football with a much younger guy who claimed to be a HUGE Wisconsin football fan, and he didn't know who Ron Dayne or Ron Vander Kelen were?

FWIW, I know of Dayne very well. And while I don't know much about RVK, I know who he is. Did I pass?

Another fantastic JORR opinion: Roberto Clemente is nothing compared to the great, amazing Jim Wynn. He of the slightly more than half as many hits fame.

So, suddenly OBP doesn't matter? How many guys with equal service time have more hits than Juan Pierre? Get your arguments in order, man.

I figured you knew a whole lot more about Badger football than I do. That's why I'm not going to argue with you about it.

It is widely agreed upon now that .OPS is the ultimate offensive statistic. It incorporates a wide range of offensive abilities into one nice figure.

Are you suggesting it doesn't apply retroactively to guys who played in the 60s? Because Jimmy Wynn's career adjusted OPS compares very favorably with Clemente's and I would suggest that the adjustments do not fully and properly take into consideration the larger percentage of Wynn's career that occurred during the second dead ball era as compared with Clemente nor the effects of the Astrodome and Chavez Ravine.

I'd listen to that just for the comedy gold of Zombie Clemente eating Elliott Harris.

And back you go to OBP instead of OPS.

Who is the better offensive player, JORR - Starlin Castro or Juan Pierre?

Castro, but he's not enough better to be "good" if you're telling me Pierre is "bad".

You said Jimmy Wynn was an average player. That belongs in the "Dumbest Things I Read on the Board Today" thread. Gary Peters wasn't "average" either. He won about 55% of his decisions and led the league in ERA twice.
