This is sad. The dead can't defend themselves. I didn't need to know all this shit and neither did anybody else.

Yeah, I kind of feel that way too.

Either way, the liver issue is the reason he died. What caused it? If what this book says is true and his lifestyle was on the wacky side then....

-Alcohol
-Painkillers
-Acetaminophen = very, very bad for the liver
-Ibuprofen = bad for liver.
-Oral steroids = not so hot on the liver.

Injectable anabolics really aren't hard on the liver. The orals are alkylated to survive the first pass through the liver, this can be harmful if done in moderate to high doses over a long period of time. Stuff live D-bol, anavar (a real nice anabolic), anadrol (that'll inflate you big time), winstrol etc. Winstrol can have its own set of problems pertaining to tendon elasticity and joint health so I doubt an NFL player would dose it.

And lord I hope he wasn't dabbling in GH in the 1980's, that stuff was mostly from the pituitary glands of cadavers. The recombinant DNA type GH wasn't available until a bit more down the time line. That stuff was used by Lyle Alzado as well....didn't work out to well for him although rumor had it that he was actually dying/died of AIDS.

Either way, fuck Bernsie for the "I KNOW EVERYTHING, THIS WAS OBVIOUS!!!!!YOUR AN IDIOT FOR NOT BELIEVING MY OPINION PRESENTED AS FACT!!!" approach to the show today. Christ, what a douche-bag.

At the very least it deprives your brain of Oxygen for a short period of time.

I'm no Dr. but I would assume that you would need to do a whole hell of a lot on a consistent basis to due some real damage. I could be wrong though. He may have just had a tank of it with a "snoopy" nose attachment so he could do some low dose every night before bed or crank it up after a game or whatever to get smashed.

Who knows and I don't think the author of the book knows either.

I don't care if he used drugs to deal with pain. I don't care if he used steroids or HGH to become stronger and recover faster. I don't care if he had affairs (God wasn't that common knowledge already ??). I care that he gave his all on the Football field all the time and entertained the hell out of me and millions of other Bears/Football fans. None of this is one bit important to me.

With some time to kill today, I spent a couple hours reading Pearlman's book at the local bookstore. I was mainly interested in Payton's career with the Bears and not too interested in Payton's private life. I thought it had some interesting stories and tidbits, especially about the 70's era.

Talks about some racial tension within the team (a pretty blunt quote from one of the players), drug use, some severe critiques from players regarding other teammates, stories of the horrific practice facilities the Bears had at the time, criticism of coaches etc. There was a mention of a Bear player striking a teammates wife, and the aggrieved wife's husband kicking the shit of the offender. There were no names stated, but it was a story I had never heard before.

Even if you are not interested in the more salacious stories of Payton's life, the football stories are a fun read. If you are a football fan, like history and you have some time to kill, go to a bookstore and read a few of the stories.

This book is a better read than some of the regurgitated crap about the '85 Bears <cough John Mullin cough> that is recycled every few years.

The part where he drills the spikes in faster than the guy with the steam driven hammer , dies, then takes a hit of nitrous and pops right back up is my favorite.

Just an example of one of the engaging stories in this book is what happened behind the scenes when Payton missed his one and only game. The popular story is that Payton could have played and the head coach (pardee) inexplicably decided not play him, but there was some behind the scenes stuff that shines a whole different light on the situation.

Why don't you just tell the story with a SPOILER disclaimer? Is the author your brother or something?

SPOILER ALERT

Well when we think of Payton now, we think how tough he was, how he played thru various injuries.

But back in his rookie year, his toughness and attitude was questioned. He missed most of training camp partly due to injury and Pardee questioned his toughness in front of the team.

Before the Bears played the Steelers during the regular season, Payton elected not the practice the Friday before the game, even though he was relatively healthy. Pardee wanted to make an example, so he benched Payton for the Steeler game, did not play. Mike Adamle started and ran for over 100 yards.

The next week against the Vikings was a MNF game. Payton wanted to start that game in front of the national TV audience, but Pardee elected to start Adamle again, and Adamle had more rushes that Payton.

At the end of the year Payton ended up leading the Bears in rushing yards, but who won the Bear rookie of the award...Roland Harper, the fullback who ran for 200 yards fewer tha Payton. The Bears wanted I guess to needle Payton, get him fired up for the next year.

That's a good point. I believe the first breaking stories about this God guy were in late 1981.
Disagree, I thought it was the Hebrews who first started breaking the stories about this God guy circa 1500 B.C.

And then two short years later the Bears screwed Harper out of a 1K yd. rushing bonus when he ended the season with 995 yards....and virtually no carries in the final game of the regular season.

That had to be a helluva locker room.
