Is being a Cub fan special?
Yes, the Cubs have things no other team has. I'm glad I'm a Cub fan. 30%  30%  [ 8 ]
No, it's the same as being a fan of any other team. The Cubs just happen to be the team I pull for. 70%  70%  [ 19 ]

Tell that to rpb. He seems to think that if Harry Caray isn't mentioned as often at Wrigley(I must have imagined the drawings and that they still do the tradition that he made famous) that he no longer defines them but Sammy Sosa(who is mentioned significantly less than Caray) somehow does.

So we're switching from what defines the organization to what is mentioned more often?
Well, it's hard to keep track of the conversations of 30k people at a ballpark but I'd wager that Harry is likely rarely mentioned hardly at all now. They've got the light thing wtih his face on it, but I don't think a single Cubs fan would say "Harry" when asked what "defines the Cubs as an organization?".

I'm just happy I was able to steer clear of DMB, counting crows and blues traveler and all that shit that came out around the same time. Thank you Green Day, Weezer, The Offspring and Rage Against the Machine....and Snoop.

False.

Because its one of the biggest stories in the history of the sport.

Because they are two different lists and like it or not, one is far more well known than the other.

The cubs have a bigger pool of things to pick from.

So disco demolition night is mentioned a lot at US Cellular? I must have missed that.

Harry Caray was pretty big too. At least be consistent here.

You'd be surprised at how much Harry Caray is brought up around non-Cub fans around here. You are underselling just how important he is to the Cubs.

You seem to think he's mostly irrelevant now.

Its mentioned when people talk white sox history pretty much 100% of the time.

Not even close. Are you serious? You think the biggest scandal in sports history (at the time, and probably still today) is on level with one loveable announcer?

That's possible. Maybe its that there was just sooooo much Harry stuff for a while after he died, its a drastic change to me.

I'll end it with this. I think there is something special about the Cubs and it's unique to pretty much any other team out there. There is a reason for that. You can debate all you want with me how Harry Caray doesn't matter, or that the stadium doesn't matter because people loved the Polo Grounds and because San Francisco has a cool stadium. That's cool. I have to accept your opinion. Unfortunately, that means that I no longer consider the Cubs to be any more special than a team like the Indians or the Mets.

So you guys win, the Cubs are nothing special. What defines them is an old stadium with ivy and good bars, three very good players(Santo, Banks, Sosa), and losing 2 games to the Marlins in 2003.

That sounds great. Glad you've moved away from the 1985 mentality.

But they are one of the 4 or 5 Nationally followed teams. That hasnt changed.

I highly doubt anyone cares if you think the Cubs are special, man

You believe, that there are Cub fans out there, wondering and hoping that you believe the Cubs are special?

I believe that if I had come to this thread and said the Cubs are not special and basically just like any other team I would have gotten a reaction calling me a Cubs hater and just jealous.

I also think most Cubs fans think of the Cubs and being a Cubs fan as a unique and special experience. You obviously disagree.

I didn't know there was a "winning" side to this. I tried to figure out which side the Sox fans wanted Cubs fans to be on this one and I couldn't figure it out.

seems like you are expecting people to care

Disco Demolition is not some sort of glorious celebration on White Sox history either. Its notable, but it destroyed the field as caused the Sox to forfeit a game.

And they apparently threw a World Series. Not so sweet either, but its all accurate.

It was part of a larger point which basically said that being a Cubs fan is a unique and cool experience that almost no other fan base can understand. But hey, take it that I wasn't complimenting the Cubs.

Remember, when I said that if I said the opposite I'd be labeled a Cubs hater? It turns out I didn't even have to do that!

I also dared to say that Harry Caray is a cool part of Cubs history. Turns out that the Cubs have basically given up on him and moved on.

You mistakenly thinking you complemented Cub fans doesnt make you a hater.

And if you think a paragraph that includes the game is secondary is a completment, you are mistaken.

Your thoughts on the Cubs dont really matter. Kinda odd that you think people care about that.

Again, do you care what I think of Purdue, The White Sox, or Nelly?

Given up on him?

Were people waiting for him to Resurrect?

Rick, the main point of your original post seemed to be: The play on the field doesnt mattter, they lose a lot, they had a good announcer who died 14 years ago and thats pretty cool.

I believe there is a "Boilermaker Rick's thoughts" section in Vineline
