That Goalie performance by Mike Smith is one of the greatest that I have ever seen in the 40 years that I have been watching Hockey.
You obviously don't watch a lot of hockey.
To the untrained eye I guess I can see where you might think you were watching a goalie performance for the ages, but in reality Smith played good, but not great. He was rarely challenged. I don't remember him making any unbelievable saves in the entire series, never really came out and robbed anyone of a clear goal. He was weak upstairs and got beat there on nearly every shot that went there. Unfortunately, there in lies the problem...Hawks never got the puck up. Put everything at his pads where he's strong.
He also let in some softies earlier in the series.
He played well, was big in his net, and read the play perfectly. But, to say he was great is a huge falacy.
There have been literally 100s of better goaltender performances in NHL playoff history. If you want to see one that was clearly better go watch JS Giguere when he won the Conn Smythe despite losing the Cup. Pick any series from that run and you'll find him playing MUCH better than Smith.
