TOO LEAKY, VOLATILE AND EXPLODEY AT WORK!!!

We had a situation here at IIT! :shock:

Someone spilled or mixed some dangerous chemicals in the Engineering One Building and there are about 20 firetrucks, cop cars, hazmat people, important people with radios and sunglasses, news crews, undercover scary types, etc....... not good.

may not be able to leave work for awhile.

Seriously......roads closed on 31st from LaSalle....at 33rd on State to about 29th.

Should be on the news. They were carrying out some big blue ball, an explosesives containment device which looked like something out of a James Bond movie. The scene here looked like that out of The Dark Knight with the amount of firetrucks.

From the Office of Marketing and Communications this morning:

During a routine inventory of chemicals in the basement of Engineering 1 on Tuesday, May 8, two IIT graduate students discovered a safety container holding a potentially dangerous material. Public Safety was contacted and the proper authorities were brought in to manage removal of the hazardous material. Engineering 1 and Life Sciences were evacuated for about three hours while the material was removed from the building.

Alerts to the community were sent out via IIT Alert, mass email, the IIT website homepage, Twitter and Facebook. However, due to a system problem with the cellular networks, the IIT Alert messaging system failed to deliver most SMS text messages. IIT's emergency messaging provider has recognized this as a system-wide failure with the network and is actively investigating the problem.

This type of situation is why IIT maintains redundant channels of communication in time of an emergency. In addition to text messaging, please be sure to follow IIT Today on Twitter and Facebook and install the IIT Alert app on your iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, and iPod).

I'd also be willing to wager that the cell networks were just ducky and someone just didn't do their job getting it out. I get "my phone was broke" and "my voicemail crashed" when really they mean to say "I ignored you" or "I fucked up and I'm gonna blame someone else".
