An exhibition game determining home field advantage in the WS.
I'll admit that may have been a somewhat silly idea, but if the presidents of the respective leagues have no problem with the All-Star game deciding the home field advantage for their leagues' respective World Series representative, I'm not sure why the fans would object. In any case, I can't really think of a better solution. I suppose they could flip a coin. The ultimate result is no more or less affected by the actual teams in question than was the previous method of alternating home field advantage each year.
I don't think the younger fan appreciates the fact that the two leagues have always been- and still are to a certain degree- separate and distinct entities. And I do realize that the distinction between the leagues has become diminished over time what with the onset of interleague play, the homogenization of the umpiring crews, etc. But the fact remains that baseball is stodgy and staid and the "major leagues" are comprised of two specific and different leagues that each send a champion to this World Series. This is unlike the NBA and NFL that are far less resistant to change and that absorbed lesser and upstart leagues into their established structures.
Perhaps in the future each team will play the same schedule and basing World Series home field advantage on overall best record will make sense. But right now that's far more unfair than basing it upon the outcome of an exhibition game.
