In fairness, it's not the same thing. Do people take professional sports too seriously sometimes? Sure. But there isn't the kind of cohesive group with pro sports. I'm a Bears fan, but I'm not a Bear. The Penn Staters don't merely identify as Penn State fans -they identify as Nittany Lions. The thing with college sports is it's not just one team in one sport: it's a whole range of programs and a university. Probably, the entire idea notion of having pro-style college sports programs is rotten to the core.

I realize Brett Myers and Brandon Marshall are not the same person. Answer my question. Are both players widely known to have a sketchy legal history? Both involved in domestic disputes. Why is it okay to be excited about adding Marshall (disregard the legal history!), yet completely dismiss the addition of Myers because of his pudwackness? I'm not saying they're on the same level, talent wise. That's obviously not the case.

Well, yes, that much is true.

It's funny that they'll slam Myers but spent an entire afternoon lauding the McCaskeys for throwing character out the window and acquiring a BIG NASTY STUD. I mean, Myers is undeniably a complete shitheel, but Marshall is legitimately a bad person. He's a serial abuser of women and basically got Darrent Williams killed. Apparently the boys think that's all A-OK as long as he can beat press coverage and he's willing to be the poster child for mental illness awareness, but to me he's the kind of guy a smart organization would steer clear of simply as a matter of course.

I suppose an apples-and-oranges defense of the Marshall stuff might be the idea that since ascending to playing professional football practically requires that you be an unstable fuckup, it's just a matter of which flavors of fuckup you want. Baseball players can be douchebags, but not sociopathically so as a matter of course.

The difference is that it's baseball vs. football. Baseball players (white guys) are expected to be squeaky clean and when they do fucked up shit, it's reprehensible.
