Went there last night because we saw it on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives the night prior.

I ate this:

Damn straight! I could eat a fried egg on my flip flop. Too bad dumbass Ugie didn't order the kimchee fries. I love kimchee. It make me so horny. Holy Stromboli!

Wife ate half of the Umami Burger and some of the fries. I had the other half and the Kimchi burger.

Great review, Ugie.

I went here and ate food. Here is a picture of my food!

I thought Guy Fieri hated eggs, but he likes mayo and aioli? Weird.

I thought I felt a disturbance in the Force on Tuesday night. Ugie was within a half mile of the Midget Playhouse.

BopNgrill is good, but I still prefer Edzo's in Evanston because the malts there are completely addictive. If you like exotic flavors laced into your sandwiches, though, bop is solid if not spectacular.

Bryan is a poser. He lived in Rogers Park for all of 3 seconds, now he lives in the southern boondocks.

I'm pretty sure we've had this discussion before about Edzo's. The food is great. I have no complaints. My beef is with Lakin's Doug Sohn business model. I mean, it's great for them. Make plenty of money and knock off at 3 in the afternoon with a line still outside. These guys are happy with their businesses exactly the way they are. No ambitions to expand or become more customer friendly. Okay, fine. But my question is, you've already got more business than you can handle, so why the fuck are you constantly seeking publicity? It seems like they want to be celebrities more than restauranteurs.

I agree. Add a few of the donut and cupcake shop owners onto that list.

I don't wait in line for mundane food types. You might have the greatest hot dog in the world but it is still just a hot dog.

Doug Sohn is like the Jesse Jackson of hot dogs. He never met a camera he didn't like or a microphone he wouldn't talk into. But he abuses his customers for his own convenience. I will never again walk through his multiple vestibules to purchase "the Steve Diggle".

But it truly is a cult of personality. I have a couple friends who seem to love Doug more than they love their own families. One day we were talking about Hot Doug's and one of my friends who lives right down the street and loves Doug's food but hates all his procedures and rules and quirks, suggested that it would make things easier if Doug replaced the self-serve fountain pop machine with a grab-and-go cooler of canned pop. Another friend who loves Doug more than life itself said, "Well, you know he makes a better margin from the fountain." The first guy's face turned bright red and he replied, "Listen here, you Hot Doug ass-kissing bastard, if I hear you defend that Joo's profit centers one more time I'm going to crack you in the face."

Aww come on JORR, I love Doug. When I worked at Midway Games across the street, we used to go there a few times a week. He always knew my name and my order.

See what I mean!

Doug is a nice guy. But I really don't want a whole lot of discussion with my hot dog vendor. Just give me my food fast and hot. And I really don't want to be five deep in line and hungry as hell while you and Doug discuss whether Josh Vitters can hit a major league curveball as he rings up your "Anna Kendrick".

I have the advantage of working in Evanston, so I am often--or at least have been in the past--free to eat lunch there at 2 PM on a weekday. Typically, nobody is around then. No waiting, no hassles, no subjection to the owner's inane conversations with the yuppie milfs he seems to favor. I definitely understand the objections to Edzo's, but my normal routine allows me to work around them.

For the past seven or eight months, though, I've been pulling a lot of 12- to 16-hour days trying to finish a project that, for various contractual and other professional reasons, I absolutely must have ready by mid-September. As a result, I haven't patronized Edzo's that much, but have instead opted for the considerably quicker and grittier Wiener and Still Champion on Dempster between Sherman and Elmwood. The owner, Gus, makes a very nice fast food-style burger and produces some excellent twice-cooked french fries. The vast majority of the customers there appear to be lunatics, addicts or borderline sociopaths, so I more or less comfortably blend in to the crowd. It's not destination dining, but it's a great Evanston spot and in many ways is a throwback to an earlier time.

The Wiener and Still Champion. Old school Evanston. I feel like I'm in the middle of a Fellini casting call every time I walk in that place. The zombies from the Ridgeview nuthouse on Main Street must stagger over there to get their fill of deep-fried bacon and corndog bites.

I felt the kimchi burger was much more flavorful than the umami burger that was featured on the TV show. Kimchi, fried egg, smoked bacon, cabbage, and a perfectly-cooked burger. Very well done, and very messy.

We wanted to try the cheese steak egg rolls they boasted on the show, but apparently high demand for the appetizer has limited their availability to weekends only.

A lot of times WSC reminds me of scenes from Drugstore Cowboy, then all of sudden a whole team of little league soccer players will converge on the front counter, so that breaks things up. Seriously, though, is someone dealing heroin out of 2nd Hand Tunes or something? Because there are odd things happening on that block...The patients from the mental health facility on Main St. seem to be part of the mix, but I don't think they're the whole story.
