I thought it was strange that the Bears put only one guy out there on defense in the first half. Peppers is good and all, but still....
This game was an abomination. The Bears were confused and phlegmatic on offense and completely inept on defense.
Let's pray that this performance wasn't a sign of things to come, but it probably will be in at least one area--left tackle. Neither J'Marcus Webb nor Chris Williams is a legitimate starter at that spot. They are both prone to making key errors that will cost the team games--and may get Cutler killed.
I don't think it was. It looked as if the team was in New York to do something fun, but then they were forced to play a football game that nobody wanted to play. The energy was such shit from the opening kickoff onward, and by the time the Weems fumble happened, you could tell the coaches were thinking "we just need to get the hell out of this stadium."
It was kind of pathetic how the Bears kept their 1's in starting the second half so they could beat up on the Giants backups just so they could say they had one decent drive, but I understood the reasoning.
And you're right about left tackle - there's no hope for that position this year, same for left guard. What's retarded is that C. Williams has proved he can be a serviceable left guard, and based on how awful Spencer/Rachal have been, he may ultimately end up becoming a starter there again. It could get so bad that they swing Carimi over to LT and pop Louis over to RT/take a chance on James Brown (if he makes the team). There's no telling how bad it'll get, but just like last year when it was burned into the team brass just how important a backup QB is, the Bears will have that same experience when it comes to having a well-stocked offensive line.
That being said, I'm holding out hope beyond hope (it won't happen) that the Bears deal for a guard or tackle before the preseason concludes. Just pipe dreams.
There are at least 6 of the 9 offensive linemen on the roster that not only wouldn't start for anyone in the NFL, they probably wouldn't make the team. Starting immediately after next season, that needs to change, and I think Emery will make it happen.
