Just discovered the broil option on my oven recently. Made some killer nachos for the game yesterday.
Never tried burgers but I have a feeling my crappy oven would do the same thing. I fried ground beef
last time and had the alarms going off multiple times even with the hood fan on.

That should do it.

Is your broiler clean?

Is grilling banned where you live or something?

If not, buy a grill.

I fried some burgers a couple months ago because I ran out of gas while cooking them. My place smelled for the next 3 days. I'll never do that again, ever.

It would not shock me if he's at a complex that doesn't allow grilling. Back when I lived in the Mecca, my complex didn't allow it if you were in the big building, but I lived in one of the outer buildings that were more like townhomes, and we could grill.

IMU: if the ban is only on charcoal grills (which is not uncommon anywhere), spend some money on a decent gas grill instead of new LED lights for your mini station wagon.

I think this is what I am going to do. I have a nice Weber grill but I have to walk 100 yards away from my
apartment to use it and I don't want to be standing outside grilling all winter. I gave my original Foreman
away to Goodwill right before I got separated from my wife...

High temp + crumbs on the oven floor = smokey mess.

Electric oven will make a huge mess no matter what as the grease splatters against the coils. Gas oven is not nearly so bad.

Yeah, the smoke isn't coming from the burgers. Unless you are buying really crummy burgers with charcoal as filler in the meat.

Let me repeat myself, the smoke is coming from the grease hitting the coils and vaporizing.

Move to a place that allows you to use a grill like a real man should.

Would it help to enclose (not tightly) the food in question (e.g., nachos, hamburgers) in aluminum foil?

Maybe, but I think you want a "dryer" atmosphere when broiling burgers, according to something I read. This is why you're supposed to keep the oven door ajar a bit.

I've never heard that before...so, 500 degrees 2" away isn't dry enough? seems weird...

That makes sense. The oven in E.P. was newer and would shut off.
The one I have now is from 1995 and will burn until you cut the power...

I never use a water pan when broiling and have it figured out pretty well. It does get a bit splattery tho... :o

Okay, then hows about foil protecting the coils from the ne'ev-do-well spattering?

Carbon Monoxide and Smoke detectors are for pussies.
Pull the batteries and use then in something useful, like a remote controlled car.

I dunno, I never heard of anyone wanting "drier" burgers. For maximum grillmark action, and to force any unwanted extra grease out, though, u can even place the burger in a fish grilling cage.

I've never had a drying out issue with broiling stuff, and I never used the water pan, either...
