They are currently running a commercial here that says something like "If you lost your car, or your car was damaged from Sandy, we'd like to offer you $1,000 off a lease or the purchase of a new car". Well isn't that nice. Your car is floating in the middle of the ocean on the way to the beaches of Norway, but Toyota is going to help you out by discounting the price of a car by a whole $1,000 and making it clear to EVERYONE that they are doing it.

Thanks for trying to profit off of a tragedy. Maybe next you should offer some 9/11 interest free financing for 12 months or start offering anyone who gets mugged a free extended warranty!

they made a great contribution with $1 mil. with the insurance and 1k back to the customer it's a win, win. it tragic that these people are put in this position, but, i don't see what they are dong wrong. as for who can and can't afford the cars, your numbers sound like a republican poll.

They are attempting to profit off of Hurricane Sandy. They built an advertising campaign designed to let everyone know that they are making an offer to those who had a damaged car.

I didn't say they couldn't afford the cars. I said that only .0001% of the people in the area actually qualify for it because it's only for cars that were damaged or lost in the hurricane. Given the tri-state population is over 30 million, I think it's probably about right.

Hurricane Sandy is a little different than supporting the troops campaigns in my opinion.

Maybe my perspective is a little different after finding out one of my wifes co-workers no longer has a house. It's literally gone. To see Toyota seeking good will from potential buyers by this campaign just seems wrong to me, especially when it's basically "we'll make less profit on the car".

For the record, they don't mention the donation. That is nice.

I going along with Boilermaker Rick solely on the fact that he chooses to use the phrase Hurricane Sandy.

Y'think they're the only one's? I'm pretty sure those who are shilling flood insurance coverage isn't trying to play off of fears caused by the hurricane.

In my business there are a lot of electrical distributors who are thrilled with the business outlook & forecast in the Northeast due to Sandy. Same goes for those in the drywall, Electric, plumbing, & carpentry trades.

They could inform people when they come in. They could inform the local authorities of the towns that sustained damage. They could put a message up on their website. We live in an age where getting your message out isn't tough. Other car companies are offering extra rebates too. There was not a single advertisement for it.
In my opinion, they are using the advertisements to build good will among everyone in the area. That's why the advertisement ran about 30 times on Sunday. I'm pretty sure anyone who lost a car because of Sandy noticed it the first time or two.

I understand if you disagree, but you have to understand that my issue is not with the actual program, but with what I considered a disingenuous campaign to use this nice program to build good will and sell cars to those who didn't have damage to a car. Aren't you a marketing guy? Can't you see that they were intending to do just that? They wanted to make sure that everyone who lives in the area knows that they are making the amazing offer of making $1,000 less of profit for anyone who had a car damaged in Sandy.

I think people are caught up with the whole "It's just a nice thing to do" not factoring in that it's simply another advertising campaign designed to sell more cars.

It probably will work for them. I think "As long as your attempt to make money is successful, it means there is nothing wrong with it" is a poor way to judge things.

Can we stipulate that traffic and sales are down at the NE toyota dealers because of the hurricane? Then it also stands to reason if traffic is down then their hardworking employees loose hours, commission and pay because, like any business, if sales are bad then employees are cut. And these same employees with reduced hours may also be dealing with their own hurricane damage.

So by doing this promo Toyota is also helping their own employees earn a living. Why is that bad? In fact you ought to be giving Toyota a shoutout.
