Hub doesn't like this hire. Meaning it's the best.

Also means he doesn't suck the medias dick. That's Hub's main qualification for a good coach or player. Doesn't matter talent. Sucking media dick makes them great.

That is a bold assumption considering I read on here yesterday that he would be the first gay coach in Bears history.

In a league where success and talent is highly coveted you have to wonder why he spent 8 years in the CFL.

That said, as the first "offensive" head coach in modern Bears history I wish him success.

If one year ago I had said that the Bears are going to fire Lovie Smith and hire a CFL coach everyone would have laughed and said that is a dumb idea. However, we've all convinced ourselves otherwise because he has a website that name drops and he worked with Jay Cutler for a few months before.

Gutsy move by Emery. He'll be a laughingstock if this doesn't work out.

Wow. Maybe Lovie will get the Montreal Allouettes job?

Does Cfl head coaching count or is this another "learning on the fly" coach? Hope he brings the top secret "insane beaver" formation with him.

I still am not sure why head coaching experience in the CFL is bad, but head coaching experience in NCAA is good.

But I agree it is a gutsy move. But no matter who Emery hired he was/is going to be a laughingstock if it did not work out.

Don Pompei:

Quote:
Coming from the CFL means Trestman will need support in getting back up to speed on the NFL. But he knows offense. He knows quarterback play. And he knows how to lead. If he has success in the NFL after having success in the CFL, he won't be the only head coach to do so. Bud Grant and Marv Levy became pro football hall of famers after taking similar paths. And here is one thing you can take to the bank: Phil Emery knows Trestman as well as he could know any potential hire. Part of that is because of the tremendous amount of time he spent interviewing and researching Trestman. And part of that is there are fewer unknowns about a 57-year old coach who has done it all than there are about an up and comer who still is figuring out who he is as a coach. Trestman was as much or more of a known commodity as any of the 13 candidates.

I didn't realize Grant and Levy took similar paths to the NFL.

So youre trying to say your Mexican drug gangs roaming the streets scenario can play out here faster than the 25 years you gave it?

I don't know if head coaching experience in the NCAA is good, but it's much better than the CFL. There are still questions about the quality coaches in the NCAA and if they can cut it in the NFL. The CFL is clearly lower than the NCAA. It would be like if the Bears hired a Division 2 coach. He may work out great but you have to question why he was stuck in Division 2 and now all of a sudden he's good enough for one of the premiere jobs in all of football.

Well at least in NCAA they have four Downs and the same size field as the NFL...as opposed to three Downs with a wider field in the cfl.

If this move fails then he is absolutely a laughing stock that is out of a job. I don't think Bevell or Arians not succeeding would have made him a laughing stock. Trestman is a squirrely nerd with an unusual path to the job so this if nothing else will be an entertaining tenure.

I have little ground to stand on though because the stubborn ass head coach of the packers is keeping fucking dom capers and his historically shitty defense for future historical allowances of yardage.

Here is another thought. If there is any kind of resentment in that locker room towards Jay already and the beloved Lovie Smith was fired in favor of a guy that was for the most part brought in to specifically work with Jay wouldn't that rift become massive?

Anyone know if there is a presser today and when it might be?

Edit -- Looks like Thursday at 10am

While waiting for the presser tomorrow here is a quality read. It deals with the new head coach and his thoughts on a certain qb he spent some time with before the combine.

I believe coaching in the CFL is closer to the NFL than college ball. Dealing with and motivating grown men is different than recruiting 19 year olds and going RAH RAH!!

I looked at his roster yesterday. The only 3 names I recognized were drunk ass party boy from South Carolina Stephen Garcia and Packer practice squad player and eventual cut David Clowney and the qb from Florida State who stole a bunch of shit with a fake check Mcpherson. I thought I would recognize a few more names.

Noel Devine from WVU was on there as well. How the hell did 3 of those 4 even get Visa's?

So why isn't the NFL constantly raiding the CFL for head coaches?

What is a fair expectation? If the Bears go 7-9 or even 9-7 next year, don't you have to call it a failure? (Based on the firing of a coach who went 10-6.) Or does he get a three-year honeymoon?

Lot of reasons. The game is different. Lack of contacts within the NFL. The difference with Trestman is that he has tons of NFL experience already.

I don't think next year matters much. It's 2 or 3 years from now.
