Coming from the CFL means Trestman will need support in getting back up to speed on the NFL. But he knows offense. He knows quarterback play. And he knows how to lead. If he has success in the NFL after having success in the CFL, he won't be the only head coach to do so. Bud Grant and Marv Levy became pro football hall of famers after taking similar paths. And here is one thing you can take to the bank: Phil Emery knows Trestman as well as he could know any potential hire. Part of that is because of the tremendous amount of time he spent interviewing and researching Trestman. And part of that is there are fewer unknowns about a 57-year old coach who has done it all than there are about an up and comer who still is figuring out who he is as a coach. Trestman was as much or more of a known commodity as any of the 13 candidates.

So why isn't the NFL constantly raiding the CFL for head coaches?

What is a fair expectation? If the Bears go 7-9 or even 9-7 next year, don't you have to call it a failure? (Based on the firing of a coach who went 10-6.) Or does he get a three-year honeymoon?
