When I worked at the grocery store, I wouldnt care what people bought with the Food Stamp card. If you want to buy steaks instead of cheaper food, have at it.

I would be bothered when I was carrying out the groceries to their car and we walked up to a brand new luxury SUV. That dog wont hunt.

What exactly is it that bothers you about that? Is it the fact that they're buying cigarettes? Would you be less annoyed if that person pulled out cash for other non-food items like chapstick, aspirin, laundry detergent, etc? And you have no idea where the cash came from, so to be annoyed by that is somewhat jumping to a conclusion anyway.

Walgreens loves normal.

The stores I was running across last week in AR were the exact same units you most often find in IL, IN and everywhere else.

The new store at State and Randolph, along with the new place in Bucktown are exceptions to the rule. when i was consulting for them in 2002 and 2003 they were opening 550 new locations a year. The RFP's used for materials had very few variations.

Cigarettes are expensive luxury items. It shows a lack of desire to get off of food stamps.

That is what I just always assumed. The tax they had to pay on the car is the reason they had to go on food stamps. It's really quite tragic.

I think the idea is "If you have money for cancer sticks, you have money for food"

Of course, we never know whats going on. Maybe the cigarettes are for grandpa who is watching the kids.

If the cigarettes are for the buyer

Also, I believe I read somewhere that cigarettes are addictive.

I get what you're saying, but I wouldnt throw that label on anyone you see pulling out cash for smokes.

No, the idea is that if you have money for cigarettes, or have the desire or means to get money to buy cigarettes, why can't you use that money for something that is a lot more useful to yourself and/or your family. My thinking is that the Link card and programs like it are safety nets, not systems total support systems.

I know that if I happened upon some hard times, I certainly wouldn't be using income for something as frivolous as cigarettes or Sox tickets or something like that.

What if your crippled uncle gave you money for smokes because he physically cant make it to the store?

Tell him No?

Maybe we should shut down the billionaires who sell highly addictive drugs to people who can't afford it. Goddamn the pusher man.

Not exactly. You start by vilifying the poor man. It's your reflex as a bonafide member of the middle class.

Probably not. In spite of his lack of education, he knows you are on the same side.

Do you really think they lower the prices because they convince people to bag their own shit? I don't believe that. Just like when a ballclub slashes their payroll in half, they don't reduce ticket prices.

Do you do this even if you are picking up say less than 10 items? Last night at the Jewels, there were 8 people in each checkout line and the self-serve machines wide open. I'm out of there in less than a minute. Opportunity cost.

For some yes, for others it's simply a "has more money than me" attitude.

What job is needed? I'm capable of growing my own food. I just prefer not to do it. I don't want to wash my own car either. I'd be pissed if my guy Earl at Crossroads got rid of his staff in the interest of "holding future prices down".

How efficient would that be? Job specialization is directly related to advanced, efficient societies.

Yeah, no.

If I'm washing my car in the middle of February, I ain't putting that much effort into it. If I'm paying someone to do it, they better be doing a nice job.

Huh? Who you crappin?

But as to your first point, that is exactly right. That is why people who are good (practiced) at using the cash register should be doing it, not me.

I understand the first part, but aren't you inconveniencing yourself by purposely standing in a line vs. being on your way?
