You should change your filter everytime. Menards occasionally has Quaker State on sale for $2 a quart. Oil filter runs you $4 bucks. So, yes, generally cheaper to just go see a guy.

It's a whatever floats your boat deal. If you don't want to wait at a service station or deal with service stations you can do it yourself.

I'm mechanically uninclined, but I do change the oil on my motorcycle. My moto guy is crazy busy and really doesn't need the business, plus you have to wait for the oil temperature to cool before changing it, so it's easier to do it myself. I take the unused oil to my car guy and he handles it gratis.

I'm pretty sure all automotive shops are required to recycle it for you, but every time I try, they give dirty looks and make up excuses to why they can't take it (recycling containers full). I don't really blame them, to be honest.

What I do is leave it by their front door after they're closed.

Used motor oil is money for helping start a burn pile ablaze.

There is a hazardous material recycling center in Naperville that takes everything from old batteries, electronics, oil, oil based paint, thermostats and light bulbs containing mercury, etc.

Many Jiffy Lube type places will take old oil, and recycle it. I have a buddy who works in a shop with an oil burning heater.

Or just pour it into the nearest river. The river will clean itself, according to Rush Limbaugh.
