For retiring Ditka's number. Shouldn't the bar be set substantially higher to have a number retired? He was a good tight end for a few years and arguably underachieved significantly with only one Super Bowl title. Also, he's an asshole. I blame SNL and other media outlets for keeping his fame eternal.

Are you kidding or just trying to get a response.

Ditka is the standard by which all tight ends are judged. Then he won a Super Bowl as an assistant and another as a head coach.

Hes in the HOF, Dan. Probably a little better than a good tight end for a few years. His Super Bowl title is one more than any other Bears coach has. Unless youre pissed that Matt Spaeth has to find another number, I dont have that big of a problem with it.

I don't have strong feelings about this but he was the FIRST tight end in the hall of fame.

Maybe it's personal feelings, but I can't stand him. He's maybe my least favorite Chicago figure of all time. I rather rot in hell for eternity with Belushi(Jim), Cusack and Oprah than listen to him for 5 minutes.

His ongoing fame is only the result of he's a loudmouth asshole who's willing to put his name on anything/do anything just to stay in the limelight. He's the worst.

His number is being retired because he was a HOF tight end. No problem with that. They aren't honoring him as a coach. He was a hall of fame player and deserves to have his number retired.

All those points are perfectly valid but don't diminish Ditka the football player.

I know he is a an obnoxious schill who has done shitty things in his time. However, there are a million stories out there of Ditka quietly doing great things for charities and just people on the street.

Ditka owned the Packers and beat Forrest Gregg at his own cheap shotting game

This is reason enough.

Agree with Frank here. HOF Tight End and deserves to have his number retired.

Dan I think your personal feelings are affecting your thoughts if you somehow think he was just a "good" TE.

Ditka and John Mackey invented the modern pass-catching tight end position. Prior to them tight ends were just blockers. It's completely deserved, even without the Super Bowl as coach. And I consider Ditka a big-mouth jerk-off.

Don't forget the St. Louis Cardinal's Jackie Smith in that group, JORR.

That said, Lebron James is better than Butkus, Mackey and Smith combined.

A great player who is sadly only remembered for dropping that ball.

I would suggest this speaks more to the Bears inadequacies in the passing game over the past two decades than to Ditka's greatness as a receiver.

Did he ever dunk on the goalpost after catching a TD pass? Weak sauce.

Denied. Ditka revolutionized the TE position. Also, there are lots of assholes In the HOF.
