Who are the top five Chicago pitchers that you've seen during your time following baseball?

Modern day Satchel Paige. Had he been able to play a full big league career, he'd be in the conversation with Johnson, Maddux, and Clemens.

If you are talking about one game, when these guys were at the top.....

LaMarr Hoyt
Wood
Prior
Black Jack
Fernandez

Best I ever saw.....an old coworker of mine had a brother that worked for the Sox. About 4 times a year he got us criminal seats in the front row. We saw Randy Johnson up close. That guy was scary.

Yeah, that's why it's a tough question to answer. Is it just how the guys pitched in the Chicago uniforms?

Contreras was awesome in 2005, maybe the best single-season pitching performance in Chicago, but fell off hard in later years. That's what happens when you have your career year at age 50.

Difficult question. I will have to look into this. One thing off the top of my head is Prior does not belong on my list due to no longevity. Also, none of the hall of famers that were at the end here. McDowell and Maddux as well as Wood are on my list. Interesting question to fill in the others.

I would add Buerhle and Sutcliffe over Zambrano as he was such a head case. I was on MLB.com and was surprised Prior is not only not in top 50 in all time wins but also WHIP as well.

Really, if we're going strictly on their body of work in Chicago uniforms, Zambrano has to be on the list ahead of a lot of guys.

If you are talking total body of work, you'd have to go:

Buehrle
Maddux
Jenkins
Rueschel
McDowell

I considered Loaiza but wasn't Jason Bere better that one year?

Also if were doing the one year thing, hard to keep Sutcliffes 16-1 in 84 off the list

Contreras????

he had a stretch where he went like 19-1 and the forkball, his signature pitch was basically unhittable.
At first, i was like "WTF?" seeing his name on a list such as this, but i believe Orr is talking about stretches of pitching dominance he has actually witnessed. Under those criteria, Contreras has to be in the conversation.

Contreras run at the end of 05 into 06 was basically Prior's 03 second half run plus a World Series title
