Two criteria can apply:

1) Greatest QB over the span of a career (longevity taken into account)

or...

2) Greatest QB at one given time (longevity is irrelevant for this one)

I'll take Peyton Manning for both. Having been born in '84, my true appreciation for sports started in the late '90's/early 2000's...

Favre was great at times, but had too many mistakes. Brady has been great for different periods of time. Rodgers was amazing a couple years ago. Manning stands the test of time. He plays chess and everyone else plays checkers. Whether it's '04 (when he threw for 49 TDs) or right now, Manning is unbelievable. I hope he plays another 10 years. I love watching this motherfucker.

Every objective list. This eras stats will diminish past greatness. No one (even his family) would argue Stafford is a great QB but according to the stats he has the most yards over a 50 game period in NFL history.

Elway's career-high in TD passes was 27 in 1997. Peyton Manning came within one the next year (his rookie year) in 1998.

You have to adjust for the current QB friendly era. Otherwise:
Philip Rivers: TD's.......200....INT's....95 in 9.25 seasons = 21.62 td's a season, 10.27

Take that out to 16 seasons to compare and we have 346 touchdowns for Rivers and 164 interceptions.

Is Philip Rivers that much better than Elway?

No, I certainly agree that you have to adjust for the era. Manning's stats are overwhelmingly better than Elway's, so let's take a better comparison...

Marino had 420 and 252. He had 120 more TD's and 26 more INT's than Elway. Shouldn't he be in the conversation, too, then?

Let me also note that Manning started his career the year Elway retired, so it's not like we're talking about generations apart...
