There is a reason he jumped at this deal. It's because the Bears gave him more than he probably even expected. Even on his radio show, he supposedly talked about how you may have to take a little bit less to stay. We are talking Drew Brees/Aaron Rodgers money if he did that.

The money isn't even the worst part. The fact that they are locked in on him with no flexibility for at least 3 years, and probably 4 or 5 is the biggest problem.

I think it is reasonable to think someone would have given him the same as Ryan.

That is not saying I think he is as good as those other guys, but teams do dumb things on the open market to get guys they want.

I think the money is a function of the increased centrality of the QB position, such that money isn't necessarily a reflection of the QB's worth, but more so of the position itself, which drives up everyone's prices irrespective of how they measure out statistically. For example if you develop a QB into a guy who isn't a stud, but is just good enough to contend with, you're probably going to pay him the going (inflated) rate to keep him around. You're going to pay him record high numbers if he's elite.

It's funny how "experts" like Mike Florio confidently stated that if Cutler and his agent were going to ask for the franchise tag salary (~16m) as a starting point, it was going to be a very short conversation. Based on where the final contract ended up, Bus Cook must have started at 20m+.

To clarify: based on the above speculation, the idea is that you backload the contract for big dollars. If you win Superbowls, you have the option of keeping him in year 6 and 7. The base salary in the first five years starts very low, and grows over time, with the bonus money prorated over 5 years so as to minimize the cap damage in any given year.

If it's indeed structured this way, it's great in year 1, because it's only a $12M cap hit. The downside would be that you're basically married to him until year 5, which is sort of the situation we find ourselves in with Peppers right now, where we can cut him, but a big portion of the cap hit will remain based on his prorated bonus money.

I think it's a good bet that this is pretty close to the actual contract structure.

This is a good thing. They are "locked in" to a starting QB for the next 3 years. I've waited my whole life for the Bears to do this, and I'm old.

This is what the big hang up is for most people, really.

The starting QB is always going to be the highest paid player, aside from the miracle young draft picks like Wilson. Teams are gonna blow stupid money on a variety of people every single year. I'm ok if it's on the QB.

Is the $ they've paid Peppers the last few years "good money" or was it "too much"? The answer is obvious. Cedric Benson - money well spent? I could go on and on.

I'd rather spend the crazy money on a QB all day every day.
