I'm no Bernstein, M.D., but I would be willing to bet good money that pain-killers killed Walter Payton, or at least his use of pain-killers. He had a nonsensical liver disease and back in the day these guys were popping darvocet, etc., like it was candy. All of that shit is processed by the liver. In fact I think darvocet itself was pulled from the market for that reason. It's all the same, and the good stuff combines an opiate with acetaminophen, another known liver toxin that won't be around much longer.

I listened to this discussion today and came out confused. Yes the teams likely did some things with the docs but also those athletes I would guess wanted back on the field asap as well.

The paradox I have is when we (the general sports fan public) talk about salaries we say they "should" be set for life or take care of their families or whatever thing you can say that somehow athletes do not have to earn their life afterward.

They get paid very well for the time they put in the profession they chose.

Does the coal miner "deserve" to set up their selves for life?

Yes Nas, but that is not a guarantee of the employer (nfl or other) that gave them a huge compensation for their bodies. If they blow it they blow it. I do allow for proven fraud then they have redress.

I wasn't really sure where Mac was coming from on this. I know in the past he has been critical of the Bears and their treatment of players- particularly players he has gotten to know. In fact, I believe he has suggested that some of the things he knows have caused him to view the Bears differently and, if not stopped him from being a fan, at least reduced his passion for the team significantly. But his take on this news seemed to be informed by his love for the NFL. Almost as if he were going into defense attorney mode on behalf of the league.

What actually killed Payton was bile duct cancer, which is incurable. It was likely a 'side effect' from all of the things wrong with his liver, but even if he was able to have bought a new liver like MICKEY CHARLES MANTLE he still would have been a goner within weeks.

He did. But ultimately what ended up making his condition 100% terminal was the bile duct cancer (basically cancer of the entire digestive system past the stomach) that developed.
