Didn't Urlacher a few years ago describe the pregame toradol injection line the team would go through every Sunday morning?

I'm no Bernstein, M.D., but I would be willing to bet good money that pain-killers killed Walter Payton, or at least his use of pain-killers. He had a nonsensical liver disease and back in the day these guys were popping darvocet, etc., like it was candy. All of that shit is processed by the liver. In fact I think darvocet itself was pulled from the market for that reason. It's all the same, and the good stuff combines an opiate with acetaminophen, another known liver toxin that won't be around much longer.

I listened to this discussion today and came out confused. Yes the teams likely did some things with the docs but also those athletes I would guess wanted back on the field asap as well.

The paradox I have is when we (the general sports fan public) talk about salaries we say they "should" be set for life or take care of their families or whatever thing you can say that somehow athletes do not have to earn their life afterward.

They get paid very well for the time they put in the profession they chose.

Does the coal miner "deserve" to set up their selves for life?

You gambled on pro athletics and bullshit you didn't know. You made a million and if you wasted it fuck off.

They don't have long careers and MOST aren't making millions. Especially considering these contracts aren't guaranteed.

To some degree, but you can't not tell somebody they have a broken leg, and you can't give pain killers out like candy to what are essentially addicts.

What a world we live in where the pro wrestling lockerroom is apparently out in front of everyone else in actively and positively addressing the steroid and prescription drug problem ....

If I know that me playing and performing will determine if I will get the rest of my contract I would probably take some things I wouldn't normally take.

Yes that is exactly my point. Should they not have foreseen this? My larger point was when did it become normal that once you become a pro athlete you should never have to work again?

Once they started signing these huge contracts.

Yes Nas, but that is not a guarantee of the employer (nfl or other) that gave them a huge compensation for their bodies. If they blow it they blow it. I do allow for proven fraud then they have redress.

Put it another way. If I happen upon an opportunity that for some odd reason someone pays me 3 million a year to water their grass for 5 years. Then after 5 years it is all done. If I did not take advantage of that to make that last what the fuck does that guy owe me in 15 years?

What if they guy paying you brings you a case of beer or 1/5 of vodka everyday and says drink this it will make you feel better and if you don't I'll replace you? So you drink it and for the most part become an alcoholic. They have a choice but they don't.

I get what you are arguing but there is some ethics involved. I don't know if they should be suing now though.

I've heard people say the nonsensical liver disease was a complication of Those AIDS.

If you recall at Payton's presser to announce he was sick he specifically said something like people are going to think what they are going to think....

Never thought acetaminophen would go off the market. I mean, I know if you overdose, there's nothing you can do but wait to die, but a world without Tylenol is hard to imagine.

That isn't really the point though. Should a profession exist that puts a worker in a position where he may refuse drugs only at the risk of losing his job?

I wasn't really sure where Mac was coming from on this. I know in the past he has been critical of the Bears and their treatment of players- particularly players he has gotten to know. In fact, I believe he has suggested that some of the things he knows have caused him to view the Bears differently and, if not stopped him from being a fan, at least reduced his passion for the team significantly. But his take on this news seemed to be informed by his love for the NFL. Almost as if he were going into defense attorney mode on behalf of the league.

which was precipitated by some story about his weight loss and general unhealthy look issued by Giangreco, I believe

What actually killed Payton was bile duct cancer, which is incurable. It was likely a 'side effect' from all of the things wrong with his liver, but even if he was able to have bought a new liver like MICKEY CHARLES MANTLE he still would have been a goner within weeks.

I would have been more than willing to give Mickey one of my livers.

Hang on, I thought there was some rare liver disease that he had. Let me get Jason Bernstein on the horn, I'll be right back.

He did. But ultimately what ended up making his condition 100% terminal was the bile duct cancer (basically cancer of the entire digestive system past the stomach) that developed.
