"There was NOBODY hosting an Atlanta sports radio show who knew the NBA like Goff, and I'll miss him for that. I won't miss the willful disdain for all things southern (not redneck...southern, like representing your college football team when you call in...it matters)."

"At first I liked Goff's show, he was entertaining. Then the more I listened the less enamored I became. If I didn't know better, I'd say those comments came from CSFMBers posing as Atlanta listeners. Knows the NBA but is otherwise a haughty jerkass who is contemptuous of his listeners and talks about how much better things are in another, bigger city? Welcome to the Bernstein Tree!

Someday someone really should make a diagram or something of the Bernsie Coaching Tree. For a guy who loves to shit on Coach K's Tree so much it would be fun to see all the titans of radio Bernsie has made.

RamblinGrimace is tweeting with him -- I guess 3 hours until the plane leaves for Chicago.

I don't even know that there's enough to make a tree. Abbatacola is still on the Score B-Team. Goff went to Atlanta but flopped because he treated his audience like crap. Dan Zampillo is a PD somewhere. And then there's Steven Berger, the less said, the better. Tim Baffoe, Dan Durkin, and Scott Lindholm are seldom-read bloggers for the Score who get zero airtime.

 I drive through Atlanta a few hours ago on my way back here. Wish I would've known . Could've offered Goffer a ride . We would have lots to talk about .

I gave Goff a listen from time to time (particularly in lieu of LoHo) and wondered if the first disciple of Bernstein's "Broadcasting for Dummies" could be a success. Between being a sports know it all and having the gumption to criticize your listeners (for their beliefs) there has to be something to bind the relationship. Being a topical storyteller, the ability to be funny or amusing, or having some skills as an interviewer can bind an audience to an abrasive host. Where Bernstein started out as being the opposite of what he has now become, I doubt even he could start out as the flaming D-bag host and grow an audience.

Perhaps the funniest part was that Goff would draw upon his experiences in Chicago (home of champions in every sports) as evidence of how things are done "the right way."

That's a Bernstein move too, except with him it's that anything we have is always better in New York.

But this is frustrating because Jason can be an engaging storyteller. When he can stay loose with callers, he seems like a guy you'd want to talk to and listen to. But not only is "I'm Some Guy And I'm Here To Tell You What's What" a dicey tack to take in general, it's especially dicey to do it as an out-of-towner, especially as a Yankee in Atlanta.

Don't you wonder what drinky and Goff were like before Bernstein gotta hold of them?

Goff and Drinky BB (Before Bernstein)

Goff: There is no doubt in my mind that Goff referred to Chicago teams as "We", enjoyed tailgating, rooted against NBA players who threatened Jordan's "#1 Player of all time" status, was one of the people who wanted Zorich to move to LB and didn't hate white people.

Drinky: Absolutely no doubt in my mind that drinky, while at Wrigley Field, after Cubs wins, was drunk with his buddies with his arms around them swaying and singing "Go Cubs Go" loudly and proudly even though that win got the Cubs to 15 games below .500. I also think drinky loved athletes who praised Jesus after wins, thought all Chicago owners were cheap, complained about ticket prices, valued pitchers wins and hitters RBI, loved and cheered for mediocre white players on the cubs and also loved tailgating.

Is Bernsie anti-tailgating too?

I think so. He makes fun of Bears tailgating all the time. He must be so happy that the Museum of Props From Star Wars Movies is coming to take the tailgating parking lots away.

To be fair, I think tailgating is sorta dumb too. You do it once and it's like okay, there, I ate bratwurst in a parking lot, moving on.

I think tailgating is awesome. Unless you basically hate people, beer, and grilled food I don't see how you could be anti-tailgating.

I do hate people and beer, so I guess I can't be expected to revel in an afternoon of beanbag toss and lukewarm pasta salad.

I'm with you.

Tailgating is pretty much one of the best things in life. It's one of the things that sold me on NASCAR. And football. And some baseball. And concerts. And church.

Tailgating at a wedding is the best!. Its the only place where the people, the beer, the food, the music, and the moment all just seem to come together in near perfect harmony. Whether meeting new family or reacquainting with the old its great, and if flying solo you've got the best of all worlds. Its always a win for the home team, and until someone get antsy about the number of empty seats at various tables everything is just copacetic.

Why do we only tailgate for events? Tomorrow, I'm going to go tailgate in the church parking lot down the road just for the hell of it.

Interesting. First thing he does when he gets back is run to Kaplan? Not Bernstein? Hmmmmm. Must be trying to get to 87.7. Kaplan is the guy you try to work. You know Goff will be putting on the Goffer charm.

I think there is something to this "Can't get rehired at CBS so quickly" thing.
