I really don't understand all the rules and intricacies of the salary cap in that league, but an expiring contract does have value in certain situations, right?

Teams are willing to trade for them midseason when they realize their season is over, but nobody wants to take on a bad contract at the start of the season.

unless you know you are going to suck, take a pick and an expiring deal so a team can clear money and you get 2 or even 3 first round picks.

I will agree it's not the preferred deal, usually only done by a 1st or 2nd year GM that has the time on his deal to make such a move

Channing Frye just got a 4-Year/$32 Million deal from Orlando. Hinrich is probably getting the minimum.

I was thinking about this a bit. Couldn't a team just claim him at his full salary level? That way they just acquired a huge expiring contract going into the next off-season, and gave up nothing at the same time.
