not losing to the Saints at home in December. This is not the Lovie's Bears. They can match the Saints score for score. I have that one in ink as a W.

I have my doubts that Jim Caldwell will succeed as a head coach, but we shall see.

Another to the other extreme coaching change. That happens at a pretty entertaining rate.

Although Lovie to Trestman doesnt qualify

The Bears offense will be even better the 2nd year into Trestman's system. I expect Wilson to make the Bears passing game virtually unstoppable. I see a top 3 offense. The Bears defense was bad last year but it was primarily because they couldn't stop the rush. They have done just about everything that they could to address that. This will be a fun team to watch. I expect them to be dominant on both sides of the ball.

The Lions head coach is Jim Caldwell. You wont need a scandal.

You expect the Bears to be dominant on defense?

I expect a top 10 defense. Now we have a punter that is kicking the ball 70+ yards

Whoa, whoa, whoa, chief. The Bears will be lucky to have a top-20 defense. Even with the various free-agent signings, the Bears have significant questions at defensive tackle (both starters), end (Jared Allen), linebacker (D.J. Williams' durability, the clusterfuck on the strong side), and safety (still apparently god awful).

Also: The Bears will most assuredly NOT field a top-3 offense this year.

I'd say the bigger question is the competency of Mel Tucker.

The Bears had a top 15 defense before Briggs got injured.

See, this I'm not sure about. Offense (especiallt passing offense) tends to be more consistent year-to-year than defense. I think a top-3 finish is unlikely, because I think Cutler sucks, but I don't disagree with the Nas's reasoning. A top-8 or even top-5 finish for the offense wouldn't surprise me.

There is also a good chance that Trestman is exposed this year. He made plenty of strange decisions last year.

Incidentally, this is the same reason I think the defense will rebound a bit, especially with the pieces they added. But I can't see any path to the 2014 Bears finishing with a top-10 defense.

Yes but are you accounting for substandard coaching personnel on that side of the ball?

10-6, win division, lose NFC Title game @SF. I'd be terribly sad, but ok with that actually.

Yes, in points scored.

They were #8 in yardage.

Here's why I say they will not be top-3 in either category this year.

First, McCown outperformed Cutler last year, but he is gone. McCown's replacements look to be a significant step down based on early training camp reports. So when Cutler inevitably misses a few games with his annual injury, the offense will suffer, not improve.

I'd agree. And that's saying a lot, especially given the personnel questions the Bears have at almost every defensive position.

I think Tucker's a dolt who puts a hard ceiling on how good the defense can be, but the personnel was so bad last year. I have to think they'll get a small bump just from adding some professional-caliber players.

Allen: 32
Young: 28 - 29 in Sept
Ratliff: 32 - 33 in Aug
Briggs: 33 - 34 in Nov
Williams 32
Tillman - 33
Jennings - 30
Mundy - 29
Hayden - 31

That's a ton of old blood being depended upon. Quite a few coming off wasted seasons due to injury as well.

There a slight non-zero chance this will be a top-10 defense.

CB is the only position that doesn't suck on paper, and that falls apart if Tillman gets hurt and/or Fuller struggles. There's simply no reason at all to think the Bears defense will be average this year. Predicting it being dominant is just asking people not to take your thoughts seriously.

And yes, GB will have an awful defense too.

The fuck??

DJ Williams/Briggs means an improved linebacking core
Fuller/Hayden means an improved secondary
Mundy simply cannot be worse at safeties than the clowns who were there last year
Allen, a healthy and in shape Ratliff, and Houston should improve the Dline.

So please explain FF why there "is simply no reason" to think the Bears should be better on D than they were last year?

They're old and have injury histories. Football is a young man's game.
