Almost all of our grandparents and great grandparents smoked, and many of our parents did, and no one in their right mind is defending tobacco as not being really bad for you. Even smokers know it now. It is in direct opposition to your idea that if crystal meth was being used by our grandparents that it would be defended now because of it. Tabacco was being used by our grandparents and it is not defended by anyone besides big tabacco who has to pay for commercials about how much smoking is bad for you.

It's funny. "Are you really telling me that Folgers Crystal Methee is as dangerous as pot?  "
We have an actual example of this that proves you wrong: Tobacco.

Tobacco never got the positive treatment that caffeine got/gets

I have to say, I find your claim about people saying Ecstasy was safe to be curious. I never knew it to be safe or anyone to say its safe. Pills, acid, etc dont usually get the "its safe" part

But caffeine is bad for you too. Lots of things are bad for you.

You're a little cranky this morning. Haven't you had your first cup yet?

I disagree. If anything, black + exotic drugs will cause even more outrage. Remember PCP?

Doesn't even have to be drugs. Black + dog fights and lynch mobs started trending on facebook.

Its not an equal comparison. If Tobacco was thought of as helpful for work and not bad for you at all for decades, like caffeine, then it would be a fair assessment

Even at its most popular smoking was never seen as a "good thing" like caffeine

I don't really think race was a big factor with Vick though. People just love dogs. If Roethlisberger had raped a poodle there would have been lynch mobs after him too.

Sure it did. We had advertisements talking about the health benefits of it. It seems like on this topic that you just take a default position to disagree with anything I've said. Mad Men basically built seasons around storylines about how it used to be treated.

It was in my area. That was the justification for it. A lot of it came from the fact that DARE didn't really spend a lot of time on it.

From Mayo Clinic:

Is coffee good or bad for me?
Answers from Donald Hensrud, M.D.
Coffee has a long history of being blamed for many ills — from stunting your growth to claims that it causes heart disease and cancer. But recent research indicates that coffee may not be so bad after all. So which is it — good or bad? The best answer may be that for most people the health benefits outweigh the risks.

Recent studies have generally found no connection between coffee and an increased risk of cancer or heart disease. In fact, most studies find an association between coffee consumption and decreased overall mortality and possibly cardiovascular mortality, although this may not be true in younger people who drink large amounts of coffee.

The link to cancer wasn't even discovered until 1920. That is about 150 years after the Revolutionary war. You are right. It wasn't decades. It was centuries.

There were plenty of things talking about the positive benefits of it.

No, Im not disagreeing because its you. I NEVER do that. Stop thinking that.

Ive never seen the AMC drama that you cited, but cigarettes never got the treatment like Coffee.

Coffee is seen as a magical potion that does no harm and makes you a stronger faster better person. Cigarettes never came close to that.

Weird.

I never even considered any pills or powders to be "safe"

Not like coffee.

You can say that all you want. Its just not true.

Are you saying there was a common perception among most people that smoking cigarettes made you a better worker?

There is really NOTHING that gets the Coffee treatment. Coffee/caffeine is so positive most dont even consider it a drug.

We're not having this conversation. Bad source.

I am now lost on exactly what your point is. JORR was saying we'd treat crystal meth the same way we do caffeine if our parents had been drinking it for breakfast.

Now, it seems like you are pointing out that caffeine, based on the science, has only small negatives which may even be counteracted by the positives. This is nothing like JORR's point.

Your tobacco-caffeine analogy is inherently flawed because Tobacco has never been perceived nearly as positively as caffeine.

I dont beleive Caffeine has small negatives counteracted by positives.

Im saying that is a common held belief and your reply confirms it.

Hatchetman posted the article. I was just referencing what that said. Why are you ignoring it?

So what if my reply confirms it? Are you saying it is made up? There are positive effects of moderate coffee usage.

I missed that post.

I understand there are positive effects of coffee.

Could say the same about cocaine though

There was two parts to that concept though. Virtually everything has some positive effects. Crystal meth is great weight loss aid.

Ecstasy is MDMA. Molly is an MDMA analogue but people are just calling anything that fucks you up "molly" because no one knows what they're taking.

Could have easily been Cocaine that won out over caffeine and people would be getting their morning Cocaine fix instead of caffeine

Same thing with alcohol and weed.

Decision makers made their choice and told the country which was ok and which was not based on how much money could be made, not concern for public safety.

No.

Yes, though ideally there wouldn't have been a choice between the two and they both could co-exist.

No.

Marijuana clearly got a raw deal but let's not take one injustice and act like all of it was wrong.

The health effects of cocaine and caffeine are not close.

Gotcha... Hopefully if my kids decide to try bad shit, they stick to alcohol, weed and caffeine. At least I understand that.
