He's a much better passer than Young or even Vick ever was. Young's pro bowl season, iirc, he still had a qb rating of like 70% and he was terrible at passing.

I agree his health makes his shelf life uncertain, but when healthy he's a really good quarterback. I dont think RGIII and Vince Young are nearly as good.

He has also played well against New Orlea... I mean Green Ba.. Ok so maybe we will find out if he's good or not once he actually faces an NFL defense.

Thanks. Interesting stuff.

Keep going.

I think that's about it. It's hard to find a list of coaches that were fired after winning records.

Bum Phillips in Houston in 1980.

Went 11-5, fired and then Houston went bad for about 5 years.

Gruden had a winning record his last season in Oakland. Not sure if that was FA or a firing.

Didn't the Buccs trade for him?

1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2002, a 1st round pick in 2003 and a 2nd round pick in 2004, plus cash.

how people keep missing the fact that option QB's have a short lifespan in the NFL i have no idea. it's like they don't want to believe it. it'll happen to jameis winston too.

cam seems to be vince younging while griffin has already burned himself out. same with geno smith.

Cam's been hurt all year. He's miles better right now than Vince Young ever was. I dont think he's going anywhere.

And he doesn't have a whole lot of help around him. Other than Benjamin his receivers are awful, they don't have a back that can stay on the field and Olsen is inconsistent.

I get everyone is frustrated and upset at how bad the Bears are this year.

But let's not get crazy.

First of all, any Bears thread and thought by Kirkwood should be ignored.

Second, there are several teams more shitty than the Bears Organization.

Clearly more shitty:
Jags
Raiders
Jets

In the discussion:
Titans
Redskins
Vikings
Carolina
Rams
Browns

They're not the absolute shittiest, which would obviously be the Raiders, Rams, and Jaguars, but no one does less with more than the Bears.

I don't really like football. I follow the Bears out of Stockholm Syndrome more than anything but I've been more or less tuned out the last five years unless people are getting fired or Trestman is shitting his face. I like the idea of the Raiders, but I don't actually like to watch the Raiders. I enjoyed the Bears in 2006.

Second, there are several teams more shitty than the Bears Organization.

Clearly more shitty:
Jags - No. Forward thinking owner. Cool stadium. Team on the rise.
Raiders - Possibly. Getting rid of Al Davis stink. Future is brighter than Bears on the field.
Jets - No. Similar to the Bears but have had better recent success

In the discussion:
Titans - Possibly. They kinda just are there.
Redskins - Most likely.
Vikings - Laughable suggestion.
Carolina - Laughable suggestion
Rams - Possibly.
Browns - No.

For the NFL's second largest market team to be in the conversation with that above list is something. Maybe not the shittiest but certainly close.

Yeah, like I said, they're not the worst, but it's only because you're saying "at least they're not Jacksonville or the San Francisco White Sox!"

i really think the redskins have to be in the top 3 because their owner is shits for the birds. i remember when they compiled that dogfood lineup of aged bruce smith and darrell green, with brad johnson as their quarterback. and he thought he was putting together a surefire contender.

the jags and panthers have only been around for 2 decades...but the jaguars are in pretty bad shape. but they had some early success. the panthers have been to a superbowl.

the jets get a pass by a lot of people but look at their history...it's not very good since their superbowl victory 45 years ago. and keep in mind they were coached by rich kotite (he did coach the eagles, too)...

before 2006, i'd have to put my own team in the conversation of course. but...i guess i won't now. :bom:

The Redskins are right up there, but they had a better run in the '80s than the Bears did -- arguably the run the Bears should have had but didn't. They've generally been a shitshow for twenty years and Snyder is an odious man, but I'd rather have an owner who tries too hard and fucks up than ownership that's happy with just enough.

The Jets suck, but they're the football analogue to the Mets and Islanders. Everyone expects them to be a bumblefuck, and they deliver. The Rams are the #3 team in their town behind the Cardinals and meth and have one foot out the door of their shithole dome. The Raiders have always existed on the periphery. The Jaguars are in Jacksonville. By the "least with most" metric, it has to be the Bears, though the Redskins would probably have to be #2.

I give the U of I bumper sultan credit for trying to make chicken salad out of chicken shit. He's saddled with an expansion franchise in freaking Jacksonville. I doubt the Jags will become the team of the UK but at least he's trying.

It appears like the Rams have a Rachel Phelps thing going on. They don't necessarily suck on the field but Kroenke appears to have his eyes on LA.

I'd say Redskins are a worse organization. Their owner is a scumbag and they always seem to be in disarray on the football side.

6. Lou Holtz (career record: 3-10)

The 16 Worst Coaches In Modern NFL History
ESPN pays him to mutter and mumble and spit at you because he won a national title at Notre Dame, but Lou Holtz was a spectacular failure in the NFL whose lisping cornpone routine lasted less than a full season in 1976. Even on the Jets' grand roster of colossal mistakes, Holtz is still in a class by himself: He managed to beat the bumbling Bills twice in addition to shutting out the expansion Bucs—and that was it. He quit with one game remaining in the season, famously telling the press, "God did not put Lou Holtz on this Earth to coach in the pros." Yeah. No thit.

2. David Shula (career record: 19-53)

The 16 Worst Coaches In Modern NFL History
Coach Fredo. As a son of Don, he was destined to enter the family business, and as an utter incompetent he was destined to fuck up the family's good name. He spent seven seasons as a position coach on his father's staff before Jimmy Johnson took him in for his first two (dreadful) seasons with the Cowboys, an arrangement not unlike Moe Greene taking in Fredo out in Vegas. David finally got his chance to run the Bengals in 1992, and in his four-and-a-half seasons, he managed to lose 50 games faster than any coach in league history. (The fact that he got four-and-a-half seasons might be even more amazing.) Shula then left football to help run the family's chain of steakhouses, which is where he's been ever since.

1. Marty Mornhinweg (career record: 5-27)

The 16 Worst Coaches In Modern NFL History
When Matt Millen took over as the Lions' GM in 2001, his very first bad decision was to hire Marty Mornhinweg as head coach. Mornhinweg's brief time in Detroit will forever be defined by that time he won a coin toss to start overtime and elected to kick off. The Lions lost without ever getting the ball, and his decision that day—"WE WANT THE WIND!"—became synonymous with a sort of proud, headlong stupidity. Well, to everyone except Mornhinweg: "It was the right call then, it's the right call now, and it's the right call 10 years from now." It wasn't, it isn't, it won't be.

I was at that Mornhinweg 'we want the wind' game (button 48). My buddy and all of the fans around us honestly though we hadn't heard the PA announcement correctly. Wasn't until kickoff that was knew for sure what was going on. That game also ended like a 6 or 7 game losing streak.

The only other organization I can think of as fucked as the Bears is the Jets. The Raiders could be up there but they might move to LA and Al Davis is dead.

2015 update:

Ok, so I think the Browns have the Bears beat. But the Bear working their ass off to earn the "top" spot.

I know it's early, but do you think Fox might be a one-year wonder? Oops, I'm having heart trouble again, better retire to spend time with my family and not coach in this shitty organization.

The Bears have been a shitty organization for the better part of 50 years or so. They have won a grand total of 2 championships since fucking 1946.

This is a team that revamped Soldier Field into the second smallest stadium in the NFL (in the leagues second biggest market).

it took the Bears about 30 years for a new stadium to finally come to fruition (McDome, Planet Park in Gary)

This is a team that for years had one of the smallest scouting staffs in the NFL.

This is an organization that in the mid 80's had to schlep from high school to high school to find a place to practice inside when the weather got nasty (yet the Lions, Vikings and Packers all had indoor practice facilities at the time).

This is a team that when Walter Payton was in is prime with a decent defense couldn't win a division title in a mediocre NFC Central. Of course when you think Vince Evans, Bob Avellini and Mike Phipps are starting QBs you may have a problem. You also traded a first round pick for Phipps. The Browns used that pick for a hall of famer Ozzie Newsome.

The Patriots have been to seven Super Bowls since SB XX, the Bears have been to one, and the Patriots were a joke of a franchise until the mid nineties.

According to Forbes the Bears are the eighth most valuable team in the NFL (again in the second biggest market). When people talk NFL and the glamour franchises the Bears have not been on that list for decades.

I was at the game yesterday when they brought out all the "Bears Alumni".

They did a cool video with Butkus going through the years to all the great Bear players and teams and then it ended with the '85 Bears and a 3-second mention of Urlacher being good in the past 30 years.
