It's tough to score from the bench.

and the reason he's on the bench is that it's tough for him to score and impossible for him to defend.

He's averaging over 10 points per 36. Look how much better Mirotic looks since he's been given more court time.

No. The reason he's on the bench is his cluelessness on defense and Thibs' reluctance to play a young guy, especially one who can't guard anyone. If he can get minutes, he'll score and score efficiently. Maybe that isn't possible on a Thibodeau team. In which case there's a real disconnect between the front office and the coach.

I think he's sitting because he can't play defense.

Or offense.

He'll be fine on offense.

once he's playing on a euro league team.

The man has played less than 200 NBA minutes. Incidentally, I think he's shooting over 60% from inside the arc.

Then he has terrible shot selection.

Maybe no one explained to McDermott that the NBA has a longer distance for threes.

Either that or he just hasn't shot well from 3 point range in a miniscule sample or he forgot how to shoot in the last three months. Hmmmm, which do you think it is?

What has he done well? What one thing has he done that should keep him on the court?

Again - I called him Adam Morrison on draft night. I don't even think he was that good to begin with.

Hansbrough. Morrison. Fredette are others.

Scoring in NCAA doesn't mean you can score in the NBA.

Whatever McDermott may or may not be, it's absurd to judge him on 200 NBA minutes.

He really would benefit for a stint in the D-league. Maybe send him there until the All star break.

I didn't like the pick when they made it and i am on record or at least this message board anyway. He is a standstill jump shooter that may not be good enough to simply run off picks. In order for McDermott to be the scorer that some here envision the offense is going to have to be geared towards him. Even then you may be looking at 18-20 max. Guys with his skill set which was supposed to be shooting are fringe NBA players at best. I didn't like Adam Morrison for that reason. It's not just a white thing either. If I remember right I provided a list of black guys with the same skill set shortly after the draft. P.J. Hairston also fits that mold and he was in this yrs draft and he is black. He at least went down in the latter part of the draft. That is about where you take guys like that. If they can't hit shots they kill you out on the floor. For all of the Kyle Korver love he absolutely killed the team against Miami. He struggled to get his shot off and he was a defensive liability. That is what McDermott is going to be. You don't take guys like that with the 11th pick.

Wasting Paxson's draft choice? It appears so.

Again, that isn't what he is. And in fact, the main problem he is having offensively in his extremely limited playing time, is hitting those jumpers you claim are his specialty.

He can't get open to even shoot many uncontested shots. Players are faster and stronger than what he is used to. His agility was 'decent' in college. This isn't college.

Watching his college clips, he appeared to have 2 or 3 main shots--either drive to the basket for a layup or, if the defense gave him enough time, a wide open, clean look 3 pointer. Might've also been able to score from the elbow-in (quick, mid-range jumpers) in college. Don't see a guy with his limited athleticism being able to get the elevation/having the quickness to score that way in the NBA. Korver doesn't try to shoot much if at all from inside the arc, unless it's a drive to the basket.

Except he doesn't have limited athleticism, unless "limited athleticism" is code for being white.

It certainly is code for not being black enough.

Do you only say small sample sizes are unreliable when it benefits your argument? In this case it's reliable I guess?

He obviously has gotten open enough inside the arc to score at a 60% clip in limited minutes. Now, work on a way to disagree with that.

Did the Bulls really need to trade up to get this guy? He doesn't fit the mold of current NBA draft favorites---guys like Gibson, Butler, Leonard. Super-quick athletes who need finishing in terms of learning NBA defense and improving their scoring.

And then to take a guy who is supposedly an offensive specialist on a Thibs coached team? Dougie Mc-Euro-Buckets might be better off on a Western Conference team, like Denver, or Real Madrid.

Once again, if you get a solid contributor off the bench with that pick it was a good one. He'll become one.
