So now its bad to have worked for the Bears? per the Bears!

If you didnt like the fact he worked for the Bears, why bring him in?

Nobody knows if Ballard or Pace will be better, but the reasoning here does seem to be based in Teddy retaining control, at least that helped get Teds vote.

For the record, I'd have been more than happy to have Ballard come back and take a wreaking ball to the place.

My objections to him were due to my thoughts, which apparently were McPhillips' thoughts as well, that he was just going to be an errand boy. Apparently, that wasn't his plan.

That would be strange though. The guy has very little experience away from the Bears. What makes him qualified to rebuild them differently?

In this case, I'd say reducing Ted's influence in the football operation, cleaning out the scouting department, getting a hot young secretary - not necessarily in that order.

Why is Ted involved in these interviews? Or really George for that matter?

Can't do much about George until you get to know him. After you build that trust, you get George to step back from the football operation meetings and decisions.

If Ted was involved in hiring Pace and he is successful. then I don't see his influence diminishing. if he was a Ballard or some other guy, then Pace's success will serve to dial Ted back plenty in time.

I think Pace will bring in his own scouts.

I think as 1, and 1A in an organization, you should spend some time with the people who will be face of your franchise and make sure you agree with them.

You shouldn't be hiring someone to work "for" Ted. At worst, he's an equal to Ted in another department. Those type of guys might customarily get an introduction and brief light-hearted conversation with a couple questions during the interview process.

They don't lead it and they certainly aren't involved in the decision beyond a "hey Ted, what did you think of the guy?"

I hire the best candidate. I hire people who I think are promotable & capable of doing a job at least one level higher than the position they are interviewing for. That is how you build an organization full of talented people who want more responsibility. The possibility that the candidate may be a threat to me never ever enters my mind. Maybe insecure guys who are bad at their jobs like Ted think this way?

It doesn't have to be either/or.

Pace could still be the best hire (I prefer him to Ballard) but he was decided upon using poor rationale. I don't like the idea that they might have passed on Ballard because he wanted too much say in the operation. However, I still probably didn't want him here anyway.
