Gibson's & every other good restaurant is obviously booked solid until 9:00 or so. I tell this guy that I have reservations at one of the best steak joints in Chicago so we go to Gibson's. They used to have a gorgeous blond bombshell who looked just like Pam Anderson who worked the check in podium & what used to be the Cigar counter. I approach her & introduce myself & ask her for a table for 2 but I do not have a reservation, & I hand her a $20 bill. She says one more of those & I can seat you in 5 minutes.

That's a separate issue. You're not tipping beforehand for better service which the initial post describes. You're tipping b/c you were ill prepared and scrambling.

Kudos on snagging a table for $20 though. Seems like the woman isn't very smart to only accept $20 or the place wasn't as booked up as you described.

The booths have always been marked "reserved" prior to the 10+ shows I've attended there.

I've always assumed you have to pay extra to get them.

It's one thing to flip the front guy a twenty for a table at a proper joint ... it's another insane absurdity entirely to "tip" nobody in particular at a (basically) fast-food chicken shack. ISIS could probably get some non-traditional recruits by enacting a strict 'no-tipping' policy.
