The International Room and the Cape Cod at the Drake both faves of my grandfather. He was going there for 40-50 years. You make the reservation, walk in, check in and the maitre D takes you to your table, he would palm the guy a $10 or $20 spot. Always had the table ready, always the same table, etc and almost always the same Maitre D.

Sometimes throwing a little cash around out front goes a long way.

You're damn right it does. Back in the day a young Scorehead went to a lot of shows & concerts. A $20 bill always got me a good table up front & great service at the Park West.
A few years ago I had a last minute opportunity to take a potential big new customer from Cleveland to dinner on a Friday night in Rosemont after a large trade show. Gibson's & every other good restaurant is obviously booked solid until 9:00 or so. I tell this guy that I have reservations at one of the best steak joints in Chicago so we go to Gibson's. They used to have a gorgeous blond bombshell who looked just like Pam Anderson who worked the check in podium & what used to be the Cigar counter. I approach her & introduce myself & ask her for a table for 2 but I do not have a reservation, & I hand her a $20 bill. She says one more of those & I can seat you in 5 minutes.

That's a separate issue. You're not tipping beforehand for better service which the initial post describes. You're tipping b/c you were ill prepared and scrambling.

Kudos on snagging a table for $20 though. Seems like the woman isn't very smart to only accept $20 or the place wasn't as booked up as you described.

I remember waiting for a table at Joe's Stone on a busy night, and after a while, one guy who must have been waiting an eternity went up to the host and asked if he could have his $100 back. :D

If they don't let you in, do you threaten to cut them in half?

$20 at Gibsons gets you a smile, not a table.

It's Suburban Scorehead. Twenty bucks probably goes further in Rosemont or Oak Brook.

The tables are set farther apart, sometimes in cul de sacs.

His story is a lie. It takes more than $20 to get things going at a place like Gibson's.

His story indicates that he paid $40 for the table.

I was being nice. I'm assuming he was confused and tipped the coat check instead of the hostess. .

I make no assumptions in a tale told by SH.

His story about the Park West makes no sense. It's almost as if he has never been there.

Are you people tipping for tables when trying to impress a client or just in general?

I'm just finding another place to eat instead of paying a $40 cover charge for the pleasure of sitting down.

The story about the Park West seating makes sense to me.

The booths have always been marked "reserved" prior to the 10+ shows I've attended there.

I've always assumed you have to pay extra to get them.

yeah i was gonna say....i haven't been to Gibsons enough times to know if they'll do it, but most places will let you eat at the bar if you want if there aren't any tables available. might not impress a client or date but if you just want to eat

The bar is usually filled with leather-skinned old guys wearing bracelets and attractive but somewhat past their sell-by date escorts.

It's one thing to flip the front guy a twenty for a table at a proper joint ... it's another insane absurdity entirely to "tip" nobody in particular at a (basically) fast-food chicken shack. ISIS could probably get some non-traditional recruits by enacting a strict 'no-tipping' policy.

The last time I had dinner with a big shooter from CLEVELAND was when my office was off Randall Road. He was picking up the check so I took him to the best restaurant in Algonquin, Montarra Grill.

Was Cooper's Hawk completely booked for the evening?

Are you kidding? They have Burnt Toast!

Actually, Montarra is an anomaly, not the kind of place you expect to find in a far northwest suburban strip mall. Frankly, I'm surprised it survives.
