I'm not sure that is totally true. There are a lot of bad processed foods out there. However, it more has to do with the type of food. If I go to a gas station and buy a hostess cupcake and the next day I go to a bakery and buy a fresh cupcake I'm not eating any better.

Well, hell! If you wanna get thorough you could call broccoli processed. What do they wash it with? How is it packed for shipping?

It's the highly processed foods that'll get you. Everyone knows the difference nowadays, whether they care or not.

No, it is bad processed food that will get you.

A hostess cupcake and one made that day are both going to be bad for you.

The problem is that people instead compare a hungry man frozen dinner with whole grain rice, kale, and skinless chicken.

What is wrong with frozen vegetables? That is a processed food. Dark Chocolate is a processed food with many health benefits.

You omitted the important part which was the second line. Processed food, just like any kind of food, can be good or bad for you.

Good question. I would say that methods differ from company to company, but in most cases frozen veggies are better than "fresh". (vitamin loss in fresh due to shipping time) Nowadays they use a flash-freezing method...from ground to freezer in just a couple of hours.

that's true of course, but with a hostess cupcake you're getting tons of preservatives, hydrogonated vegetable oils, fake chocolate, fake cream
with a real cupcake you'd likely be getting real butter, no preservatives, etc

I dont think anyone is saying "Eat any fresh foods and you're golden"

Its more like, avoid processed foods if you can because fresh foods are generally better.

I'm not saying the hostess cupcake is good for you. I'm just saying that the other cupcake isn't either especially if you are worried about things like that.

It's less that processed cupcakes are bad for you and more that cupcackes are bad for you.

You said I was wrong that processed food isn't bad for you. Now, your point is that it is in general worse than fresh food which means my statement was accurate. There is good processed food and bad processed food.

Because your stance seemed to be that whether foods are processed or not, it doesnt matter. It still kinda sounds like you believe that.

That's not true.

All you have to do is read the whole post. There is a reason you omitted the rest.

It doesn't matter IF a food was processed. It matters HOW it was processed. Dark chocolate is a great processed food. Fruit gushers are not. Just like it matters if your chicken is cooked in a light olive oil or deep fried.

Im not trying to argue with you. Chill.

Even with the rest of your post. The first sentence was "processed foods arent bad for you, either"

Im sorry that really comes off like you believe the processing is not an issue.

Even saying there are good ones and bad ones speaks to you focusing on the food and not the processing.

The fact is sometimes the process IS the problem.

Agreed. But most people arent thinking about milk or dark chocolate. More like frozen dinners, meats, snacks, etc

Because it isn't! Processing is not a problem in of itself.

Let me use an example. Let's say that I said "baked food is bad for you" because many baked goods are bad for you and baked pasta is the unhealthiest of pasta. You'd say "But, there are plenty of good ways to bake food!" and I'd say "That is right".

rogers park bryan wrote:

Exactly! There is a difference between "processed food" and "bad processed food". That was my whole point from the beginning. You seem to acknowledge that now.

Not some of the cupcakes I've had. Crumbs had a cupcake that was 780 calories.

Because it isn't! Processing is not a problem in of itself.

No, it is in many cases. The things used for processing (sulfites, nitrites) make the food less healthy.

But you're putting it all on the type of food. Its not. Sometimes the preservatives (the processing) is what makes it unhealthy.

The potassium sorbate in the Hostess one has some negative side effects

You do know that many processed foods don't have those things right? Just view those things as ingredients. In many cases, chicken is cooked in canola oil. It doesn't mean that chicken is bad for you. It means that preparing the chicken in that way is bad for you.

Isn't that exactly how it should be viewed? Judge it by the ingredients.

So does eating 780 empty calories.

Are you arguing that a 780 calorie cupcake isn't also bad for you?

I guess were saying the same thing then. I would never word it like you did though because it comes off like youre saying that any negatvity on processing and preservatives is crazy talk.

No of course not

Two cupcakes. Both fattening. Niether healthy.

But one of them has the ability to negatively affect your immune system due to preservatives.

In this case, so would all the sugar in the other cupcake.

I don't know if you've ever had a Crumbs cupcake, but they are about 95% sugar.
