These were really, really skinny, so I had to use foil over the grill.

That is exactly how I do mine. Excellent every time.

I basically do it the same way but put them in a baggie and shake/toss them in the salt/pepper/oil. Low to medium heat and I usually just turn them once, looking for a little bit of char. Definitely better results with thicker-than-a-pencil asparagus... the thin stuff cooks too quickly for me to try to mind it while I'm trying to mind everything else.
