This franchise is already derailed for years. The only thing that brings the Bears out of the NFCN basement for the next 3 seasons is a great QB. Now's the time to take the shot.

The Bears will likely be picking top 5 again next year and top 10 the year after that. This is not the only shot they will have at a high pick.

I agree they need an elite prospect QB but it's slim pickings with college offenses being so spread-happy and system-driven. Finding a traditional pocket passer is pretty damned hard. I'm trying to keep an open mind, though. I thought I read that Pace had graded Mariota as the top QB of both the 2015 and 16 classes, but couldn't sacrifice to the level required to get him.

I think you are misstating what I mean by "rolling the dice". It's about going for the highest probability at the most important position on the field. Eventually, you are going to hit on one of those and you get an Eli, or Rivers, or Rodgers. You may miss out and end up with Christian Ponder but who cares. Roll it again.

In the NFL you get the quarterback and the other things have a way of working themselves out. If Mariota is as good as he has been so far then the Titans are set next year and a ton of people were doubting Mariota prior to him being drafted. It is just what people do now. Every quarterback sucks, unless they are Andrew Luck, who also sucks now.

For a team that supposedly needed to keep someone like Cutler for years because of how important he was regardless of the cost you certainly have a very casual outlook on what we need for the next quarterback. If you want to try and replace Cutler with the 5th best quarterback in this draft then I say good luck.

There will be good and great quarterbacks coming out of college. The two best quarterbacks this year had massive red flags about them coming out of college too.

Wait for the next Andrew Luck is not an option here unless you want to wait until 2040 to see the Bears find an elite quarterback.

I get your arguments, and I don't know nearly enough about college football to claim I have some beat on prospects and their development. It's just the typical stuff that makes the NFL news circuit that prophesies dark times ahead or some nonsense.

Andrew Luck is proving himself to be very fucking overrated right now, by the way. He just bulldozed the worst division in football for 3 years and up on the pedestal he went.

Besides, every single year you hear about how weak the draft is. Rarely do you hear that it's loaded, and for the few that are hyped they wind up no better than the others.

I agree that it too risky for the Bears to blow a high pick if that is what they get. Everyone wants a QB so bad that they would risk passing on the next JJ Watt or Suh or whatever similar player is there that is more of a sure thing to risk a Cade McCown or Jemarcus Russell. Much better to pass on down since you are stuck with Cutler next year regardless. You can hate him all you want but Cutler is far superior to any crap coming out of college this year.

There is no way to know how this is going to play out in the long run, both guys could be holding a clip board and wiping the starting QB's brow off by mid season.




Yeah, in the meantime lets pick a guy that doesn't grade out past the 3rd round in the 1st, take at least 3 seasons to admit we're comfortable saying he sucks, and hope we land high enough in the draft to play it out over again -all the while passing on year after year of impact players at other positions that can come in right away and help the team.

News flash Rick, you draft a shit QB in this draft with your top pick -you aren't going to draft a QB every year in the 1st round after that until you solve the problem at the position. No one does that. Your scenario only works with a GM that has that kind of lifespan, and a team that is dumb enough to devalue high end picks that much to throw them away year after year.

I don't think this trend will continue (QB's sucking coming out of college). As is, Mariota and Winston didn't stink coming out, and both had very different reasons for people questioning them. Winston's off field issues lead to his question marks while Mariotas low grades were based on him playing in a notoriously gimmicky college offense known to produce busts. Physically, I don't believe there were many questions about either guy (feel free to correct me there as I don't have the scouting reports memorized).

But they also had their share of fans too, I wasn't one of them, but I'm ok with being wrong on them if I am. It happens.



My outlook isn't casual at all. I'm sick and tired of the Kyle Fullers and Shea McClellans of the world getting picked 1st by the team I cheer for. What I want is a straight forward logical and simple approach to the draft (in the 1st round especially): draft impact players, don't reach and take chances. If they evaluate one of these QB's in this years up coming draft and decide that QB is worth it -by all means make that guy the 1st pick then.

But make damn fucking sure its not a 'roll of the dice'.

The problem is, you didn't understand the 1st post of mine you quoted to begin with, or just misread it.

I don't personally think atm any QB available in this upcoming draft is worth a 1st round pick, that lead to my post that you quoted. You then inserted your comment which allowed for the Bears to get the QB that they felt was worth that pick.

Two totally different things. I didn't catch that wording the 1st time around.

As I stated in my last response to you (at the end), if the Bears go thru that evaluation process and truly believe that one of those QB's is worth that pick, by all means make that pick.

Do keep in mind that part of this involves me not feeling like the Bears have the right people in place to make such a decision; which makes an argument about them drafting anyone at all high stupid on my part I guess lol.

I broke the quotes up manually then highlighted them and tapped the 'quote' button for each one. Pretty much how I do it on most forums, unless they have a multi quote function.

I understood it. Your stance is that unless Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck is out there that you should just avoid drafting a quarterback in the first round.

You then made it seem like I was saying that they should make one of the biggest reaches in NFL history to draft a quarterback in the top ten who is a third rounder at best.

You are going to wait decades for a time in which a can't miss franchise qb comes out and when you have the top pick.

All the while, someone else is going to get the next Philip Rivers, or Big Ben, or Matt Ryan, or Aaron Rodgers by taking a chance on a guy who has questions about their ability to be a franchise quarterback but is good enough to be a high draft pick.

As of right now, there are two consensus quarterbacks worthy of a top 5 pick this year. That may change, but if it doesn't, I'll take my chances with one of those guys and hope at a minimum he is Philip Rivers. If he ends up being Jamarcus Russell, then you just try again because the best way to win a Super Bowl is to get the elite quarterback. I can point to a lot of first round QB picks that ended up being the main reason a team won a Super Bowl. It's a lot harder with an offensive lineman or a defensive end to do that.

Are these GREAT QBs? No. But they all offer(ed) minimum 4 years of dirt cheap control (<$1M).

Fill around and maybe game manage your way through playoffs and maybe to Super Bowl (Grossman!)

Rick, that wasn't my main point. It's my opinion atm that there will be no QB's in this up coming draft worth a 1st round grade, or at least a top 10 grade -so don't go for a QB there. A QB doesn't have to be as highly prospected as Luck or Manning for them to be picked there imo, just used them as quick examples, my bad in not expanding on that more.


All that aside, if we must look at QB that high in this draft.. who ya got so far (I know it's early and this is subject to change)?


I'd say Goff looks the best out of the ones I've watched so far.

I just see a lot of qbs out there who are considered elite who weren't considered worthy of a top grade and I want one knowing they may also suck.
I'd be happy with Connor Cook knowing that he may suck.
I need more time as him being an elite qb prospect. He seems like a guy who gets pumped up and then pushed way down.

Lots of able bodied QBs in this draft. Guys that can be had in a 2nd and 3rd round. I fully expect one to be in a Bears Jersey....even if he needs to order it himself and Ted Phillips forwards him the link to the Bears store.

Bears currently have the 10th pick in the draft.

If we lose out, we could be top 5. Losing to Tampa will be huge because that would give us the draft pick tie breaker probably.

That kid is a football player. Barring injury he will be a 10 yr pro & occasional Pro Bowler. I'd love to see him on my Saints, or from a pure football joy standpoint, on the Raiders with Khalil Mack.
