Watching some teams , like the Eagles today and I know Pitt has had some troubles. I think the tradeline is around week 8 which might be a bit too early to determine your team is in dire needs of a good kicker.

Josh Scobee and the numerous other teams that have shitty kickers cycle through constantly are evidence enough you shouldn't trade a consistently good kicker who could easily play until he's 40. It also renders this another of many stupid Bears thoughts. Congratulations.

Gould is the 3rd highest paid kicker. Signed through 2017...so in 2018 he will ask for the most, at $4.5 M...probably a 4 year deal, accepting a 3 year.

Please have had a history of contract squabbles ith long time players. Things that just shouldnt get out, often do. They are often played out in the media and public, when they shouldnt be.

I am OK with Gould being here until he is 40, assuming he is effective. then you pay him NOW, as I assume going into next year, you have some serious cap space, so eat it up now.

IF, you arent going to do this....and think, you can find a kicker....then trade him.

I will use the Quasim Mitchell bonus payment one year as an example. Angelo didnt know if the guy would turn out to be a good LT or not, but he paid him a $1 M bonus in his current contract year because the Bears had the money under the cap and IF the guy worked out, the contract would be huge, so this way they lock him up for 2 years.

It didnt work out, but was a solid financial move....which is what they should be looking at right now with any player they expect to have here in 2 years.

one thing i gotta give robbie gould is that he added some serious legstrength. i remember when he first showed up lovie wouldn't use him over ~49yds, but if you watched his kicks today he had distance to go 60+ on the 54 and 49 yarders. remember when his kickoffs were a problem? not anymore. and he's got plenty of leg in the 50s.

i say keep him around cuz its one part of the team the last 2 regimes didnt manage to fuck up. he's your best shot at a bears lifer on this team. seriously who's the next mannelly if not gould?

Hmm in regards to Scobee I forgot he was traded. That being said, selling Gould seems sort of meaningless to me. Just my two cents.

And I enjoy ridiculing others for dumb thoughts because it seems like some folks just need to be told that knee-jerk reactions and full blown despair should not be the norm. There are good fans here, smart fans, but when the hivemind trends toward an annual rebuild, it's a problem.

You can try out 50 guys between now and then and probably save $3 Mill against the cap and find a guy. As I said, we found Gould on the junker heap....so it can be done.

Or, if you wan to make him the elder spokesperson of the team until he is 40, go ahead, put his money against the cap now...or trade him.

Its the kind of proactive thinking that rarely comes out of Halas Hall.

I see. My apologies if I'm touchy today, I'm just irritated from people who were going to get angry about the Bears win or lose. I just don't know how to deal with that.

It sounds silly since he just won the team a game, not to mention from 49 yards out with a ball being held by a guy who was sitting at home last week. I guess the larger point I should make is that the team has enough special teams problems as it is, and while Gould isn't Mr. Kickoff this season, he's not worth the 6th or 7th rounder you'd get for him, PLUS this isn't a 4 or 5 year "plan." I think the Bears legitimately want to and could be competitive next season and potentially playoff-caliber in 2017; timelines that satisfy Gould not being ancient and broken down.

Gould will still be playing 5 years from now when this rebuild will (hopefully) be over. If Pittsburgh offers a 2nd for him OBVIOUSLY but that won't happen so keep him.

Define a decent pick.....Myself, I would be happy to take a 5th round pick for a kicker. This team should be in total rebuild mode. By the time they are good again, Gould will no longer be a top kicker.

Rebuilds in the NFL don't take five years. That's an eternity in the NFL. A RB five years into his career is already a mid-career professional in the NFL as opposed to just entering the prime of his career, as similarly aged NBA or MLB player would be. The MLB/NBA "rebuild" model doesn't apply in the NFL.
