...you're still on the Island, and therefore an Islander.

Tonight, the 'Hawk' are the lucky opposing team that gets to play the BrooklynErs in their inaugural regular-season opener that ushers in the Barclays Center era, which is located in Brooklyn, which you had better not call Long Island while you're there, even though geographically, it IS part of the Isle. I will defer to CH to wax poetic about the Nassau Coliseum, Russian billionaires, money and Brooklyn. I will also defer to anyone who wants to offer any kind of pre-analysis, as I simply don't have the energy, other than to say that the Ers are good. Hi, Nick!!!

As again I will be focusing on the Cubs tonight and tomorrow, I won't really be into this one or tomorrow's game (which is the second half of a home-and-home between these here teams).

Hawk lose tonight 3-1; win tomorrow 5-3.

I have a soft sport in my heart for the Isles but some of their charm is gone now that they're out of the Nassau Coliseum

IT'S NOT EVEN THAT. The Islanders have become a subsidiary of the Brooklyn Nets; basically they get $50 million a year or something to let the Nets run their business operations. The guy who runs the Nets, Brett Yormark, is someone Dan Bernstein would masturbate to:

Quote:
The other thing I want to mention is that personally, I don't respect the way [Islanders fans] approached it. How they attacked our Twitter handle, the vocabulary they used in which to reference me and our organization.

Kay: Welcome to Twitter, Brett.

I understand that. But on the same token, I don't appreciate it. That being said, I read between the lines. And we want the fans to have a great experience at Barclays Center. So after meeting with my team today and understanding the pros and cons of going with something that's a little bit more Brooklyn versus something that's been around for a while, we've decided that for opening night, we will go back to the goal horn that's been around for years. And I'm not acquiescing to the Islander fans. What I am doing is doing the right thing. And the right thing is to welcome the Islander fans to Brooklyn, do it the right way and we feel this is part of that process.

On fans putting tickets where their mouths are:

This is where, hopefully, I can encourage Islander fans to be even more supportive. Of the people that comment, and in fact there was a petition that was done by about 650 fans, only 30 were season ticket holders. So my point here is, it's great to comment, about what we're doing and be critical of it. But I would ask all those people who signed the petition, now that you've got your goal horn, to buy season seats - My sales team is standing by right now - and support the Islanders in Brooklyn. Don't just support them on Twitter with criticism of what we're doing. But vote with your wallet, support them with your wallet and and come see islanders hockey in Brooklyn.

The first thing we hear from the new guys at the start of the new season is, “…he’s delivered a good team to us and we’re going to monetize it.” Way to stir up the excitement, Brett.

Between "Everyone on Twitter," "monetize," and "don't send tweets, send money," I'm one short of a Bernstein Bingo.

Nice shorty from Anisimov on the backup goalie. Overall, I'd say both teams look pretty discombobulated, and that's equal parts early-season blues and what appears to be some downright horrendous ice at Barclays. Crawford has been very good and has needed to be, his defensemen are barfing up pucks in front of him time after time.

OK. I'm back. Good thing I missed the Kane goal, as I didn't have to fight the urge to cheer for an uncharged and unconvicted rapist (allegedly).

No, it was a pretty sweet top-shelf goal. So was Tavares's. But I gotta tell ya, this Barclays thing is a tire fire. They gotta get outta there. This building is not capable of hosting the NHL. The sightlines are shit. The lighting is shit. The camera angles are shit. The ice is shit and I watch ~40 Blackhawks home games a year. Totally unfit.

Taking the third off, gotta swim and blow off some steam from that horrific Cubs game. Hang on, Hawks!

Doesn't sound like they're giving Kane too rough a reception. #rapeculture #winning

Looks like Kane got the goal.

Hell of a shot from Zidlicky to start the third. Not a big fan of the three-on-three overtime, though it's hard to say, because what we really saw was four-on-three overtime from last year, just with a player added instead of subtracted, and four-on-three is close to automatic.

I stand by my assessment from earlier, which is that there's not much you can read into this one between the extended preseason for the veterans and the inexcusable condition of the ice. Players are calling it "just awful." We could have a real problem on our hands. I'm not convinced Ratner doesn't rebuild Nassau as an NHL-compliant venue and the Isles get out in five years.

Kane said the ice was "fine" but the boards were "hot".

I fully expect Stinkfinger to write 4 articles about the inhumane things Kaner did to the boards because they were so hot

Puck was bouncing like a tennis ball out there at times, too. Maybe Brooklyn has some sort of artisan fair-trade freezer that doesn't freeze pucks all the way because it lacks toxic refrigerants.

I really don't think this Brooklyn thing will work out. Mets game or not, you had to sell out a 15,000-seat arena for opening night and you managed THIS:

Image

This is a Blackhawks home game in the ABC Line era.

Why exactly did they move to that arena? That is beyond awful.

I now feel much better about the milwaukee area getting an NHL team. Even though they don't want the Admirals....the new Bucks arena will have ice!!!

Nassau was severely outdated. No suites, no club level.....etc. It was like the old MECCA in Milwaukee.
Plus, it wasn't actually IN NYC like this one is. Always helps to have your professional sports venue in an area of high population concentration.
Green Bay excluded.

Long Island may prove to be the exception to that. Despite the population density in Brooklyn being much higher, the most loyal customers are out in the suburbs. As outdated as Nassau was, at least it was built for hockey. They tried for years to replace it, but Hempstead and Nassau wouldn't approve of it because they thought a new development would attract "undesirables." Apparently everyone who lives there is Scorehead.

The new horn was "MTA-inspired" but really just sounded like a Vespa. I thought the Long Islanders were being ridiculous about it until I heard it for myself, then Yormark (who isn't the owner, per se, but a Nets executive charged with running the Isles) went on YES and made an ass of himself.

Incidentally, his twin brother served in the same position with the Florida Panthers and was notorious for whoring out every single piece of real estate in the building. He even had the chairs sponsored -- I mean monetized. One of the first things new ownership did was fire him.
