Would somebody be so kind as to fill in this square as to what "BCBS" means; all I know it as is Blue Cross Blue Shield. I've been hoping somebody would post it long-form in this thread so I could understand clandestinely, but alas, no.

Don't trust reviews. People have strange axes to grind, when it comes to beer. Two or three years back, I waited in line on Black Friday, and came away with a good haul. I was talking to a bartender later that day, telling him about my score, and he spent ten minutes bitching about BCBS. He said that there are five barrel aged beers on the shelves at Binny's that are better than BCBS, yet he was unable to name names.

It's just the opposite. These beers are supposed to get better with age. That's the whole point.

Two of my buddies tried all of them at FOBAB, and they said that they were all fantastic, especially the Prop. And these guys are as snobby as beer snobs get. They love to say that a beer isn't all that. They rate beers lower than I do at untappd.com

I have yet to find a better beer than any of the BCBS releases. These are top notch beers, that live up to the hype.

It goes both ways though. For however many people have axes to grind, there's an equal amount who will either praise stuff unconditionally to justify the time and effort they spent attempting to obtain said beers and/or will look to increase or maintain the trade value of what they've acquired.

No, not with the variants. The adjuncts usually mean they're best consumed within 3 years before the ingredients start falling off. Prop 13 for instance has barely any coconut presence now, and a Coffee from this year will blow out one from last year. This doesn't even get into the separate issue of oxidation, which usually cautions against aging any of these beers for too long either. The original Vanilla isn't really close to what it was in 2010, but it's still far superior to the Vanilla Rye from last year, which isn't what one would normally expect. Same goes for Bramble vs Cherry Rye and Backyard.

Got 4 regulars tonight at DeCarlo's in Mundelein...I drank the first one while making apple pie moonshine for a party Saturday...I liked this year's better than last year's.

FWIW...I think the manager at DeCarlo's said he had a 4 pack of last year's still sitting in back...
